Louisville’s offseason overhaul is still drawing notice, and ESPN’s latest preseason update adds another sign that Pat Kelsey’s rebuild has momentum.
The Cardinals have spent the summer reshaping nearly everything around the roster, replacing three coaches and nine players after an uneven season that ended with Louisville winning its first NCAA Tournament game since 2017 before falling to Michigan State in the second round. That kind of turnover usually comes with questions. Instead, Louisville has kept climbing in national perception.
ESPN moved the Cardinals up one spot in its updated preseason rankings, placing them at No. 12 after the first refresh since July 1. It’s not a massive jump, but it does keep Louisville in the same conversation as the sport’s upper tier and reinforces the idea that Kelsey has built a roster with serious upside.
The offseason haul has been impossible to ignore. Louisville brought in the No.
1 Transfer Portal class and added one 5-star transfer along with one 5-star recruit from the 2026 class. The new-look group gives the Cardinals a different kind of identity, one built around a dominant rim-protector in Flory Bidunga, a speedy guard in Jackson Shelstad, an athletic wing in Karter Knox, and two freshmen expected to contribute right away in 5-star Obinna Ekezie Jr. and 4-star Boyuan Zhang.
In ESPN’s rankings, Louisville remains the second-highest ACC team behind Duke, which Jeff Borzello has at No. 2 nationally. Virginia checks in next at No. 13, followed by Miami at No. 17.
The Cardinals’ schedule also includes several high-profile matchups against teams ESPN has in the top 25. Louisville will face No.
22 Kansas in an exhibition game, then play No. 4 Texas on Dec.
1, No. 8 Michigan on Dec. 5, and No.
19 Kentucky on Dec. 12.
The Cardinals might also see No. 15 St.
John’s in the second round of the Players Era Festival tournament.
Louisville also has the No. 9 odds to win the national title at +2500, another marker of how far this roster has risen in a short time. With the Cardinals now sitting at No. 12 in ESPN’s preseason rankings, the early read is clear: this team is being viewed as a legitimate Final Four threat.
