Louisville’s offseason haul left both programs with a fresh batch of names worth circling, and a few of them already look like immediate difference-makers.
On the basketball side, Pat Kelsey didn’t just reload - he attacked the portal and landed impact talent at the top end of the market. On the football side, Jeff Brohm kept stacking transfers and added speed, size, and upside across the roster.
With that kind of turnover, the excitement is easy to understand. Here are five newcomers Cardinals fans should be watching closely in 2026-27.
Flory Bidunga sits at the top of the list for a reason. The 5-star transfer from Kansas gives Louisville the kind of paint presence it has been missing, and his numbers back up the hype.
Bidunga won the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year award after averaging 2.6 blocks per game and finishing with 91 blocks, both top-five marks in Division I basketball. He also put up 13.3 points and 9.0 rebounds per game and recorded 13 double-doubles.
That’s the profile of a center who changes games on both ends.
Jackson Shelstad is the next name Cardinals fans should know. Louisville needed a replacement for Mikel Brown Jr. after the former 5-star freshman was drafted No. 6 overall by the Brooklyn Nets, and Kelsey found one in the Oregon transfer.
Shelstad was a 5-star recruit in the 2023 class, ranked as high as No. 24 overall and No. 6 among point guards. He already has three productive seasons under his belt, including an All-Big Ten Third Team nod as a sophomore.
Before a hand injury ended his season, he was averaging 15.6 points, 4.9 assists, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game while knocking down 33 3-pointers in just 12 games. He’s healthy now and expected to be one of Louisville’s top players.
Tre Richardson brings the kind of speed Louisville football needed after losing Chris Bell and Caullin Lacy. The Vanderbilt transfer is the highest-rated addition in Brohm’s portal class, checking in as high as No. 66 overall and No. 14 among wide receivers.
Brohm said at ACC media day that he expects big things from him, saying he wants Richardson to have over 80 catches and 10 touchdowns this upcoming season. Richardson led Vanderbilt with 806 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 46 catches last year, and he posted three 100-yard games.
His seven touchdown catches ranked No. 5 in the SEC.
Obinna Ekezie Jr. gives Louisville basketball another major piece to get excited about. Pat Kelsey landed the 7-foot-2 center, who reclassified from the 2027 class into 2026 and now ranks as high as No. 14 overall and No. 1 among centers in the 2026 class.
He had originally been ranked as high as No. 2 overall and No. 1 among centers in the 2027 class. Ekezie averaged 17.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game, and Louisville now has a true frontline talent who should make an immediate impact.
Lincoln Kienholz rounds out the list for Louisville football. The Ohio State transfer hasn’t had much college game action, but the 4-star quarterback was highly recruited out of high school and arrived at Louisville after the Cardinals attacked the portal for the fourth straight year under Brohm.
Kienholz threw only 36 passes in three seasons with the Buckeyes, but he was a top quarterback in the 2023 recruiting class and was ranked as high as No. 138 overall and No. 11 among quarterbacks coming out of high school. He threw for 9,100 yards and 104 touchdowns in his prep career, including 3,422 yards and 46 touchdowns in his final season.
Over his final two high school years, he piled up 86 touchdowns against just 12 interceptions.

The toughest swing may be CJ Rosser, the No. 1 overall recruit, whose recruitment has drawn a national crowd and plenty of attention from the schools he has visited more than once.
