Louisville’s schedule is shaping up to be every bit as brutal as its preseason buzz suggests.
The Cardinals climbed to No. 12 in ESPN’s updated way-too-early rankings after sitting at No. 13, with St. John’s sliding from No. 7 to No. 15 after it was learned Donnie Freeman will miss the entire upcoming season. That bump only adds to the attention around Pat Kelsey’s offseason work, which has Louisville sitting with the No. 9 highest odds to win the 2027 National Title and looking like a strong bet to land inside the preseason top 15.
The bigger story, though, is what awaits once the games start. Louisville went just 1-6 against the final top 25 last season and was 0-4 against the top 15, and this year’s non-conference slate is loaded with ranked opponents from top to bottom.
The Cardinals are set to face six teams in ESPN’s top 25, or seven if you count the exhibition against Kansas. Dig a little deeper and the challenge gets even stiffer: four of those opponents are in the top 15, three are in the top 10, two are in the top five and one is in the top two.
Duke is the headliner at No. 2, but it’s far from the only heavyweight on the list. Louisville also has No.
4 Texas and No. 8 Michigan on the schedule, followed by No.
14 Virginia, No. 17 Miami, No.
19 Kentucky and No. 22 Kansas in the exhibition.
And the pressure doesn’t end there. In the Players Era Championship, Louisville opens with Texas Tech.
A win would likely set up a second-round matchup with No. 15 St.
John’s. If the Cardinals keep advancing, the semifinals could bring No.
6 Tennessee or No. 24 Iowa State.
On the other side of the bracket, possible final-round opponents include No. 8 Michigan, No.
14 Alabama, No. 17 Miami and No.
25 Gonzaga.
It’s the kind of schedule that leaves no room to coast, but that’s exactly the point. Louisville wanted a proving ground, and Kelsey clearly built one. The payoff could be a team that arrives in March far more hardened than it was a year ago.
