Louisville’s trip to North Carolina State just got a lot more complicated.
After the Cardinals dropped a 30-27 decision to Wake Forest, Jeff Brohm said star quarterback Lincoln Kienholz is dealing with an injury and will be a game-time decision for Saturday’s road matchup. Brohm kept the details vague, saying, "He has something," and adding, "I'm not going to probably elaborate. It will be a game-time decision."
That’s the kind of update Louisville did not want heading into its first true road game of the season. Kienholz left the Wake Forest game with a late hit, and now the Cardinals are waiting to see whether their offense will have the player who has been at the center of its early success.
Kienholz has been a big part of Louisville’s start, and the numbers back it up. The Ohio State transfer has thrown for 1,140 yards and seven touchdowns while completing 69 percent of his passes. He’s also given the Cardinals a running threat, carrying the ball 45 times for 134 yards and leading the team with six rushing touchdowns.
His impact showed up right away. Kienholz threw for 300 yards or more in each of his first two starts with Louisville and helped lead the Cardinals to their first-ever win over SMU. But now the quarterback who looked like one of the sport’s fastest-rising names is suddenly in doubt for a pivotal Week 5 road test in Raleigh, with Louisville trying to move to 3-2.
If Kienholz can’t go, Louisville does have other options. The Cardinals added two quarterbacks this offseason: 4-star freshman Briggs Cherry and West Georgia transfer Davin Wydner.
Cherry entered the 2026 recruiting cycle as one of the country’s rising quarterback prospects, ranking as high as No. 263 overall and No. 18 at his position. Wydner brings his own dual-threat profile after throwing for 3,390 yards and 10 touchdowns at West Georgia while rushing for 670 yards and 10 more scores, according to ESPN.
For now, though, Louisville is left waiting. The first injury report later this week should offer a better read on Kienholz’s status, and Cardinals fans will be hoping he lands at least questionable before kickoff. Louisville and North Carolina State are set for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. local time.
