Louisville’s fast start has turned into something bigger than a hot September run. After knocking off SMU, the Cardinals notched their first win over a top-25 team this season and their first victory over SMU in program history, then climbed to No. 16 in the country. That kind of resume bump is why Louisville suddenly looks like more than an ACC spoiler.
The national conversation has started to catch up. Sports Illustrated recently refreshed its 2026 College Football Playoff projections, and Bryan Fischer slotted Louisville into the field as the final at-large team. In his bracket, the Cardinals land at No. 11 and would open against Indiana, the 6-seed and former national champions.

That projection isn’t just built on the SMU result. Louisville also made an impression in Week 1 with a gritty showing against Ole Miss, and that game looks even better now with the Rebels sitting at No. 4 after beating LSU last weekend.
Jeff Brohm’s team has the kind of offense that gets people looking twice. Lincoln Kienholz has been at the center of it, putting up 816 passing yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions while adding 153 rushing yards and four scores on the ground.
Louisville also has real juice in the backfield with Isaac Brown and Keyjuan Brown. Keyjuan just delivered a career day with 163 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Isaac, the Cardinals’ preseason All-American, posted a season-high 67 rushing yards against SMU.
The schedule only adds to the case. ESPN Analytics has Louisville favored in every remaining game, with at least a 60 percent chance to win each one. The Cardinals also avoid Miami, Clemson, Virginia, and Duke, and their road trips to Georgia Tech and NC State look a lot more manageable than they did in the offseason.
There’s still a long way to go, but three weeks in, Louisville has done enough to look like a real playoff contender. The challenge now is simple: keep stacking 1-0 weeks and handle business. For a fan base watching the national attention roll in, the Cardinals’ rise is already giving them plenty to enjoy.

It was the kind of performance that showed how much the group can shape the Cardinals ceiling when the blocking is sharp, the communication is sound and the run game stays on schedule.
Cason Henry said the line has stayed disciplined and still sees room to grow, which is a promising sign this late in the season. The encouraging part for Louisville is that the group is no longer just holding together, it is starting to settle in, with pieces that had been unavailable for much of the year now back in the mix and the unit finally getting a chance to build some continuity. Louisville Suddenly Has A Real Path To Much More Than 10 Wins
Louisvilles win over SMU moved the Cardinals to 2-1 and, just as importantly, kept the door wide open for a season that suddenly looks bigger than simply piling up a respectable record. ESPN Analytics now sees a favorable road ahead, with Louisville carrying a strong chance to reach the ACC Championship Game if it keeps taking care of business in conference play.
The path is manageable enough that the Cardinals can start dreaming beyond 10 wins, especially with the most demanding tests still to come against Kentucky and Pitt. If Louisville keeps stacking victories the way it has early on, an 11-1 finish is in play, and so is a first College Football Playoff appearance, which is a place this program has rarely had reason to picture this clearly this early.
