Louisville Still Has Work To Do In Battle With Kentucky For Henry

With Louisville cruising as a frontrunner, fierce recruiting competition from Kentucky and other top schools now threatens their grasp on 5-star sensation DeMarcus Henry.

Louisville’s push for 2027 star DeMarcus Henry just got a lot more complicated.

The Cardinals have spent real energy building momentum with the elite small forward, and for a while it looked like they were in strong position. They were the first school to land an official visit from Henry, hosting him in early September, and Pat Kelsey followed that up by making another trip to see him later in the month. That kind of early attention matters, and Louisville has clearly treated Henry like a priority.

But Kentucky is now in the mix in a serious way.

Henry has trimmed his list to eight schools - Louisville, UConn, Kansas, Arkansas, North Carolina, BYU, Ohio State, and Kentucky - and he is scheduled to take an official visit to Mark Pope’s program on October 5, according to Sam Kayser.

Henry’s recruitment has the feel of a full-blown heavyweight fight. Duke is also believed to be involved after Jon Scheyer extended an official offer in August, even though the Blue Devils are not part of the current final eight.

For Louisville, the good news is that Kelsey has already put the Cardinals in the conversation in a major way. Henry’s first official visit was to Louisville, and after that he went to UConn and Arkansas. Kentucky is now the next big stop, and that gives the Wildcats a chance to make their case in a battle that already has plenty of national power involved.

This is also the latest chapter in a rivalry that has been active on the recruiting trail since Kelsey and Pope arrived. The two schools went head-to-head for multiple transfers in the portal over the offseason, and now they’re fighting over one of the most coveted players in the 2027 class.

Henry is no ordinary target. He is the unanimous No. 1 small forward in the class, and his ranking reaches as high as No. 2 overall nationally. The 6-foot-7 forward put up 18.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game this summer at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam.

At the moment, Louisville still has the best shot according to Rivals’ prediction meter. Kelsey sits as the frontrunner, with Louisville holding a 25.8 percent chance of landing Henry. Arkansas follows at 22.6 percent, and UConn is next at 18.8 percent.

That margin isn’t huge, and Kentucky’s upcoming visit only tightens the race. Louisville has the lead for now, but the Cardinals are going to have to hold off a loaded field if they want to keep Henry in their corner.

Louisville Fans Have Every Right To Question This Defensive Collapse

Louisville had enough offensive moments to stay in the fight, with Tre Richardson, Isaac Brown, Lincoln Kienholz and Kaleb Beasley all turning in noteworthy work in a game that never felt fully out of reach. But the closer the final stages got, the more the Cardinals were forced to live with a defense that could not hold up against North Carolina State, and the contrast between the two sides of the ball became impossible to ignore.

The real frustration for Louisville was how often the coverage broke down around Bailey, who kept finding receivers with far too much space to work with. Add in the gap in time of possession and the lopsided number of offensive plays, and it left the Cardinals chasing a game they could not control, with the questions now turning from effort to assignment and coaching decisions. Pat Kelsey Awaits A Louisville Recruiting Decision That Could Change Everything

Louisville is still in the running for one of the biggest names in the 2027 class, with Pat Kelseys program among the finalists for five-star combo guard King Gibson. The top-15 overall prospect has become a major target for the Cardinals as they try to keep building momentum on the recruiting trail, and landing a player of Gibsons caliber would be a clear statement about where the program is headed under Kelsey.

For now, Louisville is waiting like everyone else as Gibson moves toward a decision that could reshape the class. The Cardinals already have one commitment in the 2027 group, but adding a high-end guard with Gibsons profile would raise the ceiling of the class and give the staff a much bigger win to point to as recruiting season heats up. Louisville's ACC Hopes May Come Down To One Risky Question

The ACC is shaping up as Dukes league to lose for the 2026-27 season, with the Blue Devils leaning on a blend of experienced pieces and another wave of promising freshmen. Louisville, though, is at least part of the conversation because of how aggressively it has rebuilt, joining a conference picture that also includes Virginias returning core and Miamis perimeter upside with Acaden Lewis and Shelton Henderson, plus a handful of other teams trying to break through.

For the Cardinals, the real question is less about talent than timing. Their roster overhaul gives them a wide range of possibilities, but it also makes chemistry the central issue in a race where the margin for error will be thin, and the challenge is figuring out whether a group like this can come together fast enough to matter when the league season starts sorting itself out.
