Louisville basketball gets one more dress rehearsal before the games start counting, and Wednesday night brings the first home look at a rebuilt roster that already turned heads with a road win over Kansas.
The Cardinals take on Mercyhurst on Oct. 28 in their second and final exhibition game, coming off that 89-83 victory over the Jayhawks. Louisville’s new group - built by Kelsey and stocked with 11 offseason additions - has already flashed plenty of promise, and now the fan base gets its first chance to see the team inside KFC Yum! Center.
That Kansas game offered an early snapshot of what this roster can be. Jackson Shelstad paced Louisville with 23 points, while 5-star Obinna Ekezie Jr. came off the bench and delivered 16 points, eight rebounds and five blocks in just 19 minutes.
Wednesday also gives Louisville fans another update on two key players working back from offseason surgeries: Ekezie and Karter Knox. Both appeared in the Kansas exhibition off the bench, with Ekezie looking dominant and Knox logging 12 minutes. Earlier this week, the coaching staff said Knox is getting closer to full strength.
“Right now I think his knee is healthy. I think now he is going through the mental side of it and trusting it.
I think he is really close to being 100%. But he is healthy.
The sky is the limit for him and he has all types of potential.”
The Mercyhurst game is the last tune-up before Louisville opens the regular season Nov. 2 against Chattanooga. The Cardinals enter the year ranked No. 11 and carrying high expectations after an offseason that brought in the No. 1 transfer Flory Bidunga, along with Ekezie and a group of experienced additions that includes Shelstad, Knox, Alvaro Folgueiras and De'Shayne Montgomery.
Louisville’s first true test after the opener comes Nov. 15 at Memphis, but first comes one more chance to sharpen things up, tighten the chemistry and let the newcomers hear what a night at the KFC Yum! Center sounds like.

Louisville Faces A Stanford Offense Built Around Two Rising Threats
Stanfords offense brings Louisville a familiar kind of test: one part volatility, one part danger. Quarterback Davis Warren has had stretches where the passing game clicks and others where it stalls, while the Cardinals will also have to account for running back Micah Ford, who has come on lately and adds another layer to the game plan. Add in a receiving group that can create problems and an offensive line that will determine how much time Warren has to settle in, and Louisville has a real week-of-prep puzzle on its hands.
For the Cardinals, the emphasis has to be on forcing Warren into uncomfortable snaps and making Stanford earn everything. That means getting pressure without losing shape in coverage, because the ball can still get to the right place if Louisville is too aggressive or too passive. The challenge is less about chasing one star than about handling a front that wants to spring Ford and a passing attack that can look dangerous when Warren finds a rhythm. [Read more 🡒]
Mikel Brown Jr. Just Gave Louisville Fans A Glimpse Of His Ceiling
Mikel Brown Jr. is only a few games into his NBA career with the Brooklyn Nets, but his third appearance offered the kind of preview Louisville fans had to notice. The former Cardinal delivered his best pro performance yet, scoring 17 points with five rebounds and five assists while topping the 20-minute mark for the first time. It was the sort of outing that suggested he is starting to find his footing at the next level.
Brown's biggest moment came late, when he helped fuel a fourth-quarter push with a string of clutch plays and capped it with a buzzer-beater that sent the game to overtime. Brooklyn still came up short, but the late-game confidence and shot-making stood out in a way that went beyond a simple box score. For Louisville supporters, it was a clear glimpse of how high his ceiling might be if this is what he looks like this early. [Read more 🡒]
Seth Trimble Is Giving Louisville Fans Another Reason To Watch Closely
Seth Trimbles arrival at Louisville already gave the Cardinals a new backcourt storyline, and now he has added another layer to it before even getting fully settled in. The guard has been named to the 2027 Jerry West Award Preseason Watch List, a nod from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame that highlights the nations top shooting guards in Division I mens basketball.
Trimble brings plenty of recognition with him after four seasons at North Carolina, where he built a rsum that made him a familiar name well before he landed in Louisville. For the Cardinals, the watch-list selection is another reminder that this transfer could matter well beyond depth and rotation pieces, with Trimble now positioned to be one of the more closely tracked players on the roster this season.
