Louisville basketball is about to take its first exhibition step of the season in the Bahamas, and while fans won’t be able to watch or tune in because the game isn’t broadcast, the buzz around this roster is already building.
That’s not surprising. Louisville loaded up this offseason with multiple 5-stars and 4-stars from the Transfer Portal and the 2026 recruiting class, and one of the headliners is Obinna Ekezie Jr., the top-ranked center in the 2026 class.
The 5-star freshman recently made a statement that Cardinals fans are going to remember. Asked about the season ahead, Ekezie didn’t hide from the moment.
“Y'all gonna see us win a National Championship this year,” stated Ekezie. “We are going to get that done.”
It’s the kind of quote that matches the mood around Louisville right now. For the second straight season, the Cardinals are carrying Final Four expectations, and Kelsey’s work in the portal helped put this team in the conversation.
Louisville landed the No. 1 Transfer Portal class in the nation, and that has the Cardinals sitting with one of the best odds to win the 2027 National Title.
The national-title drought is still very much part of the story, too. Louisville’s last championship came in 2013, and Ekezie’s message lands because it speaks directly to what fans have been waiting to hear.
The Cardinals currently have the ninth-highest odds to win the National Championship in 2027, along with the second-highest odds in the ACC, trailing only Duke.
Ekezie, listed at 7-foot-2 and 240 pounds, comes in with serious pedigree. He ranked as high as No. 14 overall in the 2026 recruiting class and was the No. 1 center. He joins a group that also includes Flory Bidunga, Jackson Shelstad, Adrian Wooley, Karter Knox and more.
Louisville has size, shooting, depth and physicality. And with Ekezie already talking like this, the Cardinals have a freshman who clearly believes the ceiling is as high as it gets.
