Lawayne McCoy arrived at Louisville with a year of production already on his résumé, and now he’s talking like a receiver who expects a much bigger stage.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound transfer posted 27 catches for 396 yards and three touchdowns at Florida State in 2025, but after moving to Louisville this offseason, he says the feeling around him has changed.
"I'm more hungry," McCoy told reporters after Saturday's practice. "I've got a chip on my shoulder.
I feel like last year was like a teaser. I'm ready to pop on the scene this year."
McCoy’s arrival is part of a wider boost to Louisville’s receiver group, which also added Vanderbilt transfer Tre Richardson this offseason. McCoy said having Richardson on the field is already helping the room click.
"I'm happy to have Tre out there," McCoy said. "He wasn't with us in the spring; he's out here now. You could see it all coming together in the receiving room."
That progress has been noticeable to Louisville wide receivers coach Deion Branch, who said after practice that he’s been "super impressed" with McCoy.
"Early on, as it should be, it's a little tough for all of the guys coming into this complex offense. The winter workouts, he was kind of all over the place, as he should be.
That's understood," Branch said. "As we got closer to spring ball, he was a little bit better.
Summer, you could see where he made that tremendous jump. Now, I'm looking for these guys to go out here and lead these younger guys, and also be the counterpoint of our offense."
Branch also believes the whole position group has a chance to reach another level in 2026. With Jeff Brohm entering his fourth year as head coach, Louisville’s receiver room could end up being one of the best units on the roster.

Louisville has spent the offseason remaking itself almost from top to bottom, with three coaches out the door and nine transfers arriving to replace the old roster. The changes even reached the staff, where Peyton Siva departed for St. Johns under Rick Pitino, underscoring just how much churn this program has absorbed before a new season even begins. In the middle of all that movement sits Flory Bidunga, one of the headline additions and the kind of player who can change the feel of a roster quickly.
Adrian Wooley, one of the Cardinals who stayed put, has already pointed to Bidunga as someone who can swing things in more ways than one. Louisville does not need him to be a one-note presence near the rim, and that is part of what makes his arrival so important for a team trying to find its identity on the fly.
