Louisville Just Took A Tough Recruiting Hit With Pat Kelsey Watching

Louisville faces a setback as top recruit Asa Montgomery shifts his sights elsewhere, although the Cardinals remain determined to land other elite prospects in the 2027 class.

Pat Kelsey’s 2027 recruiting push is still loaded with big names, but Louisville just took a hit in one of its highest-profile pursuits.

Five-star small forward Asa Montgomery has canceled upcoming official visits to Louisville and Arizona, according to On3 Sports’ Joe Tipton. The news trims Louisville’s path with one of the country’s top forwards, even as the Cardinals remain heavily involved with other elite prospects in the class.

Montgomery, a 6-foot-7, 200-pound forward from Georgia, sits among the nation’s top recruits across the major rankings. Rivals has him as high as No. 3 overall, ESPN lists him at No. 8 nationally, and On3 Sports puts him at No.

  1. He’s also ranked as high as No. 2 among small forwards.

Louisville had earned an official visit from Montgomery earlier this summer, when he laid out eight visits in all. The other programs on that list were LSU, Florida, UConn, Providence, North Carolina, Duke and Arizona. With Louisville and Arizona now removed, the focus appears to be shifting toward the remaining schools.

Duke is currently the clear leader in the race, at least by the numbers. Rivals’ Prediction Meter gives Jon Scheyer a 78.2 percent chance to land Montgomery.

Montgomery’s résumé is strong beyond the rankings. He won a gold medal with Team USA at the U17 World Cup and averaged 24.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.3 blocks per game in the EYCL.

Even with the setback on Montgomery, Louisville’s 2027 board is still in a strong place. Kelsey has also made a major run at No. 2 overall recruit DeMarcus Henry, and that pursuit continues to look like the priority. The Cardinals earned an official visit from Henry, traveled to see him in September, and Kelsey recently praised what separates him from the pack.

For Louisville, Montgomery’s cancellation stings. But the bigger picture is still clear: Kelsey is swinging hard at the top of the board, and Henry remains the central target at small forward.

Louisvilles Fourth Quarter Over Florida State Looks Even Better On Film

Louisvilles fourth-quarter surge against Florida State looked decisive in real time, and the film only sharpened the picture. The Cardinals made timely adjustments on offense, with Lincoln Kienholz settling in and the run game providing the kind of balance that forced the Seminoles to defend every inch of the field. Isaac Brown and Braxton Jennings both showed up in key spots, giving Louisville the sort of complementary production that can turn a tight game into a statement finish.

On the other side of the ball, the tape highlighted how well Louisvilles defense managed the late-game pressure. Coverage sacks helped squeeze Florida States options, while the Cardinals positioning made it difficult for the Seminoles to find clean answers when the game started to tilt. The broader takeaway is simple enough: this was not just a matter of momentum, but of execution and coaching decisions showing up at the right time, which makes the fourth quarter look even more convincing the second time around. Louisville Faces A Tricky Road Test At Syracuse With Plenty At Stake

Louisville heads to the JMA Wireless Dome for a Week 7 matchup with Syracuse carrying a 3-3 record and a fair amount riding on the trip. The Cardinals are favored by two touchdowns, but this is also their first chance to pick up a road win this season, which gives the game a little more edge than the spread might suggest. Add in the fact that both sides are dealing with a lengthy injury report, and the setting feels more complicated than a typical midseason conference date.

Syracuse has enough uncertainty of its own to make this one worth watching closely, with several players on both teams listed as out or questionable. For Louisville, the challenge is not just handling the road environment but doing so in a game where availability could shape the flow from the opening series. The Cardinals have the better paper case, but the kind of contest they get in Syracuse may tell a lot about how steady this team really is away from home. [Read more 🡒]

Louisville Has A Real Chance To Prove The Florida State Win Was Real

Louisville heads to Syracuse on Saturday night with a good chance to show the Florida State win was more than a one-off. The Cardinals have the kind of setup every solid team wants in October: a road game, a conference opponent and a chance to follow one impressive performance with another against a side that is working with a backup quarterback. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, and there should be plenty of attention on whether Louisville can carry over the energy and execution that stood out last time out.

CardinalAuthoritys staff expects this one to be shaped by both sides of the ball, with Louisvilles offense trying to keep recent form rolling and the defense looking to take advantage of the matchup in front of it. It is the sort of game that can tell you a lot about a team, not just because of the opponent, but because of how it responds on the road after a big win. If Louisville looks sharp again, the Florida State result starts to feel like a real turning point instead of a nice September memory. [Read more 🡒]
