Louisville’s secondary took another unexpected turn this week, as safety D’Angelo Hutchinson has entered the transfer portal for his fifth year of eligibility.
The move comes just six days after Hutchinson said he was returning to the Cardinals. He had been set to rejoin the team this week and was on track to start practicing as the season approached, but instead he will explore another destination with the college football calendar just days from opening.
Hutchinson’s fifth year became available through the NCAA’s new 5-for-5 rule, though that path was complicated almost immediately. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit granted the NCAA’s stay request on Aug. 21, and then a Jefferson County Circuit Court judge issued Hutchinson and 12 other players a temporary restraining order that allowed them to play.
According to a report from On3, Hutchinson is now headed back into the portal after spending his entire college career at Louisville. He appeared in 46 games for the Cardinals and finished with 147 tackles, 4½ tackles for loss and one interception.
His exit also lands after Louisville had already moved to fill out the safety room. Before Hutchinson announced he was coming back, the Cardinals had projected Koen Entringer and Kaleb Beasley - transfers from Iowa and Tennessee - as the new starters alongside Jojo Evans.
That meant Hutchinson would have had only one week of fall camp to get back up to speed before the team shifted into game-week prep. Louisville opens the 2026 season against Ole Miss on Sept. 6 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.
