Louisville looked dead in the water early, then ripped the game away from Florida State in a way that felt almost unreal.
Down 14-0 and staring at what looked like another ugly night, the Cardinals were on the ropes again as Florida State marched toward a 21-0 lead. The Seminoles had the ball at the 2-yard line and were ready to land the knockout punch when Louisville finally got its first stop. One snap later, Isaac Brown turned the night on its head with a 97-yard touchdown run - the longest rush in school history.
That was the spark, and Louisville never let it go out. The Cardinals followed with a string of stops and scores, flipping the game from a disaster into a runaway.
In all, they went from trailing 21-0 to leading 35-14, and the stretch had the kind of ruthless flow that had been missing before now: stop, score, stop, score, stop, score. Before long, the game belonged completely to Louisville.
Brown’s run did more than break the school record previously held by Ken Porco’s 93-yard run from 1958. He also finished with the third-most scrimmage yards in school history, and the decision to let him handle kick returns only added to a monster night. He was the centerpiece of everything Louisville wanted to do on the ground.
The backfield depth showed up too. Even with Keyjuan out, Marquis Davis and Braxton Jennings looked like pieces for the future, and Lekhy Thompkins carved up the Florida State defense as well. Chris Barclay’s group kept producing answers all night, and that stable of backs gave Louisville the kind of balance it had been missing.
The defense deserves its share of the credit, especially after the ugly opening. Once the offense started rolling, Louisville settled in and made Florida State work for everything.
The Seminoles did not find the end zone again until under nine minutes remained in the fourth quarter. The pass rush kept Daniels uneasy, the simplified man coverage held up, and Florida State never found a way to match Louisville’s pace.
There were signs of a coaching adjustment too. Mark Ivey being up in the box seemed to help the defense settle down after the first three drives, and the busts became far less frequent.
On offense, Brian Brohm was noticed with the call sheet and getting plays in, and after the game Jeff said he had taken more of a back seat to playcalling. The move worked.
Louisville did not need much from the passing game, with Lincoln finishing with 140 passing yards, but he still managed two rushing touchdowns while the backs handled the heavy lifting.
Whether that becomes the norm remains to be seen, but the shift to a more CEO-style role for Jeff clearly paid off here. Brohm appeared to settle on the run game and stayed with it instead of forcing the issue, and that choice fit the night perfectly.
For all the problems in the first three drives, this was as close to a complete performance as Louisville has put together this season. The Cardinals still have plenty to build on, but the way they answered a 14-0 start and a Florida State drive threatening to make it 21-0 makes this feel like a massive turning point.
