Louisville basketball’s 2027 recruiting run keeps picking up steam, and the latest update brings another major guard into the picture.
Pat Kelsey and the Cardinals have been stacking up momentum throughout August, with Louisville already landing on the updated lists of several top-tier prospects. The Cardinals made 5-star Reese Alston’s top seven, 5-star Cayden Daughtry’s top 14, and 5-star King Gibson’s top 10. Now they’ve added another elite name to the mix: 4-star Chase Lumpkin has trimmed his list to six, and Louisville is still alive.
According to On3 Sports’ Joe Tipton, Louisville is in the hunt with Kentucky, Michigan, Alabama, USC, and Arkansas. Lumpkin announced the six-school cut on social media, and the group tells you everything you need to know about how hot this recruitment has become.
Lumpkin is a unanimous top-30 overall prospect and one of the most coveted guards in the class. He’s also drawn more than 31 offers from major programs that didn’t make the final six, including Tennessee, Oregon, Auburn, Georgia, Florida State, Ole Miss, UCLA, Indiana, Miami, Iowa, UConn, and others.
The rankings paint the picture of just how highly he’s regarded: as high as No. 26 overall nationally, No. 5 among shooting guards, No. 6 among combo guards, and No. 8 among point guards.
Louisville’s board in this class is clearly guard-heavy, and Lumpkin fits right into that trend. All four of the Cardinals’ key 2027 targets mentioned here are point guards or combo guards, which shows where Kelsey and his staff want to strike.
247 Sports reports that Lumpkin has already taken visits to Michigan and USC, and he is set to visit Alabama next weekend. That matters, because the race is already crowded and the schools involved all have heavyweight recruiting reputations.
On the floor, Lumpkin brings scoring punch and poise. He’s described as an elite scorer who is confident with the ball in his hands, and his shooting ability gives Louisville a chance to dream big about a potential pairing with another priority target, 5-star point guard Reese Alston.
Lumpkin’s summer with Jet Academy in the Nike EYBL Circuit only added to the buzz. He posted 17.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 2.2 steals per game, production that matches the profile of a guard who can tilt an offense.
The final six are loaded, so Louisville has plenty of work left. But with the Cardinals still in the mix for Lumpkin and already making noise with Alston and other top guards, Kelsey has positioned Louisville squarely in the thick of one of the class’s most important recruiting battles.
