Louisville has made an early push for one of the country’s top 2028 running backs, and Zaiden Jernigan has noticed.
The 5-foot-10.5, 195-pound back from Louisville, Mississippi, picked up an offer from the Cardinals in early June, and he said UofL has already made a clear impression even if the communication hasn’t been constant.
"I haven't really talked to them much lately, but they were telling me that I'm a priority for them and the No. 1 player on their board," Jernigan said.
Jernigan said Louisville’s offense stands out to him, especially with the way the Cardinals use the run game. He also pointed to Isaac Brown as part of what makes the fit appealing.
"I know they have a running back who's supposed to be one of the best in the country," he said. "I feel like I'd fit in great.
They run the ball a lot. I like their system."
The Cardinals are far from alone in the chase. Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, LSU, UCLA, USC, and Indiana are all involved, and Jernigan said the attention has picked up fast.
"It's been great," he said. "They've been blowing my phone up every day.
I have people texting me, trying to get me to come on campus. I'm trying to balance everything out."
He visited Notre Dame and Auburn in June, and he doesn’t have any more trips lined up right now.
As for a timeline, Jernigan said a decision could still come this year, though he expects it may stretch into next spring.
"If [a commitment comes] this year, it'll probably be around November or December, but I'll probably be committing next year, sometime in the spring," Jernigan said. "
Jernigan’s profile matches the hype. He is ranked as the No. 5 running back and No. 94 overall player in the 247Sports Rankings, and in the 247Sports Composite Rankings he comes in as the No. 2 running back and No. 51 player nationally.
He describes his game in direct terms: speed, power, and the ability to turn one crease into a long touchdown.
" My greatest strength is my explosiveness. I can rip a play for a 50, 60, or 70-yard touchdown.
I can run through people," he said. "I'm very physical.
That's what I can take advantage of at the next level."
Jernigan said he wants to sharpen his route-running before reaching the next level. Away from football, he keeps things low-key.
"I'm not really around too many people off the field. I just stay to myself and play the game," he said. "I get along with people well."
