Deion Branch has a simple message for his Louisville receivers this week: block out everything.
No TV. No scrolling. No getting pulled into the outside noise, especially with the Cardinals favored by 36.5 points against Villanova.
“The spreads and what we're favored by, that stuff doesn't matter,” Branch told the Cardinals. “You still have to go out and play the game.
We have to go out and execute our plays. I need my guys to perform at a very high level for the team and also for themselves. ...
So that's my message to the guys. Don't pay any attention to it.
Just come in here and continue to work and push forward.”
Louisville heads into tonight’s 2026 home opener still carrying the edge from a 41-38 season-opening loss to No. 11 Ole Miss, a game that exposed a few things the Cards need to clean up fast.
Defensively, they have to cut down on big plays and stop completions over the middle and up the seam. On offense, quarterback Lincoln Kienholz needs to settle in earlier and resist drifting out of the pocket too soon.
That adjustment may come naturally with a full game under his belt. In his first start, the Ohio State transfer completed 18 of 29 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns. He became the first Louisville starting quarterback to throw for at least 300 yards in his debut since Kyle Bolin, then a redshirt freshman, did it in a 37-14 loss to Georgia in the 2014 Belk Bowl.
Louisville also has a defensive injury to monitor. Head coach Jeff Brohm said Monday that starting defensive tackle Demeco Kennedy will be out 2-4 weeks after suffering an undisclosed injury in the Ole Miss game. Tommy Ziesmer is listed as Kennedy’s backup and had one tackle over 44 snaps on Sunday.
There’s at least one potential boost on the way. Cornerback Tayon Holloway, who missed the opener with an ankle injury, is hopeful to return for the home opener.
Tonight’s game is set for Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at L&N Stadium.
Several writers around the program are expecting Louisville to handle business comfortably. Alexis Cubit picked the Cardinals 35-21, C.L. Brown went with 45-3, Payton Titus predicted 48-7, and Brooks Holton chose 42-7.
Louisville’s 2026 schedule continues to stack up after Villanova, with SMU coming to town on Sept. 19 at 3:30 p.m., followed by Wake Forest on Sept. 26.
The Cardinals then travel to N.C. State on Oct. 3 before returning home for Florida State on Oct.
- The rest of the slate includes trips to Syracuse, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, and Kentucky, along with home games against Stanford, Pitt, and Wake Forest.
