Louisville basketball’s push for 5-star point guard Reese Alston is starting to feel real, but the race is far from over.
On3 Sports’ Jamie Shaw has Louisville out in front for the 2027 standout and continues to project the Cardinals to land him. Shaw said earlier this week that he has a “Medium” level of confidence in that pick, which is enough to get Louisville fans buzzing about what could be a huge addition to the class. The Cardinals already have a 4-star pledge from Louisville native Ferlandes Wright, and the idea of pairing Wright with Alston is exactly the kind of recruiting win that gets attention fast.
Still, Alston is one of the premier players in the 2027 cycle, and that means plenty of heavy hitters are circling. He’s picked up more than 36 offers, per 247Sports, with programs like Purdue, Florida State, Houston, Illinois, Kansas, Texas and USC all involved. Even so, the real pressure points in this race appear to be LSU, Tennessee and Kentucky.
LSU has been in the mix for a while, and Will Wade’s move from North Carolina State to Baton Rouge has only sharpened the Tigers’ focus on making a quick impression with Alston. Kentucky entered the race in late July, and the Wildcats already have 5-star Ryan Hampton, a top-15 overall recruit in the 2027 class, in the fold. Mark Pope and his staff are now trying to add Alston alongside him.
Tennessee is the newest program making noise. Shaw recently said the Volunteers are the latest team to jump in and push for Alston, and Louisville has felt Tennessee’s recruiting strength before, including when the Vols landed Nate Ament in 2025.
Alston’s profile matches the buzz. The 6-foot-3 point guard is ranked as high as No. 6 overall and No. 3 at his position. He averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game, and he earned a spot on the MaxPreps Junior All-American First Team.

Louisville's Running Back Depth Could Change This Offense's Ceiling
Louisvilles running back room already looks like one of the cleaner strengths on the roster, and coach Chris Barclay is making it clear that the groups value goes well beyond the top names. Isaac Brown, an All-ACC selection, and Keyjuan Brown headline a unit that also includes Braxton Jennings, Marquise Davis and Lekhy Thompkins, giving the Cardinals a mix of talent, versatility and insurance that can matter over a long season.
Barclay pointed to the health and progression of the group as key factors, while also revisiting last years Governors Cup win, when Louisville leaned on backups and still got strong production. That kind of depth can change the ceiling of an offense, especially if the Cardinals keep finding ways to stay fresh and keep multiple runners ready for meaningful snaps. [Read more 🡒]
Louisville May Have Found The Guard Who Changes Its Ceiling
A Colorado judges preliminary injunction has opened the door for athletes in the high school class of 2022 to pursue an extra year of eligibility, and the ripple effects are already being felt across college basketball. For Louisville, the timing matters because the Cardinals have spent the early part of this cycle trying to keep pace with a transfer market that could get crowded fast if more players seek a sixth season and court clearance follows.
Among the names already tied to new schools is Seth Trimble, whose move underscores just how quickly rosters could shift once eligibility questions are sorted out. Louisville figures to be right in the middle of that scramble as coaches around the country wait for the legal picture to settle, with the potential to reshape not just depth charts but the ceiling of teams willing to move early and take a swing. Louisville Is Betting Big On An Offensive Line Overhaul
Louisvilles offensive front is heading into a major reset, with only Lance Robinson back from last season as a returning starter. The Cardinals have rebuilt much of the group around him, and Robinson is currently projected at left tackle after spending time learning center, a bit of versatility that could matter as the staff sorts through the best combination up front.
The reshuffle has brought in help through the transfer portal, including Eryx Daugherty and Johnnie Brown at guard and Evan Wibberly at center, but the bigger issue is still how the whole unit will hold together once camp battles settle. If Anwar ONeal is able to return from injury, the picture could shift again, and Louisville is still trying to build enough depth to feel comfortable with the overhaul. [Read more 🡒]
