Louisville’s bounce-back against Florida State did more than end a two-game skid. It gave the Cardinals a fresh surge in the ESPN Football Power Index, and a much clearer path through the rest of the regular season.
After Friday night’s 44-20 home win, Louisville moved up 12 spots to No. 24 in the latest FPI update. Syracuse, meanwhile, checks in at No. 63 as the teams prepare to meet Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The FPI Matchup Predictor gives Louisville a 75.9% chance to win in the Carrier Dome.
That projection fits the bigger picture, too. ESPN’s updated numbers favor Louisville in every remaining game except the season finale at Kentucky, which still narrowly tilts to the Wildcats at 52.8%. That mark has held for a third straight week.
The Cardinals also own a favorable outlook when it comes to postseason eligibility. Louisville’s remaining strength of schedule is No. 59 in the FPI, and the model gives the team a 92.1% chance of getting to at least six wins.
At the top of the national FPI rankings, Notre Dame sits at No. 1 ahead of Georgia, Ohio State, Miami and Alabama. The Irish also carry the highest national title odds at 18.4%.
Within the ACC, Miami leads the conference in the FPI, followed by Wake Forest, Louisville, Pittsburgh and North Carolina.
Louisville’s trip to Syracuse is part of a schedule the FPI has largely liked from the start, even if the results haven’t always matched the projections. The Cardinals were picked to beat Ole Miss in the opener at Nashville, and Ole Miss pulled out a 41-38 win on a last-second field goal.
Louisville was also projected to beat Wake Forest and NC State, but dropped both of those games. The Cardinals did deliver against Florida State, winning convincingly after the model had them as the favorite there as well.
The Orange enter the matchup off a 28-25 road loss at Virginia and were picked to finish 14th in the ACC preseason poll. Louisville has won 13 of the 21 all-time meetings between the schools.

Louisville's Top Commit Is Creating A Recruiting Problem Jeff Brohm Must Solve
JaHyde Browns rise has given Louisville exactly the kind of in-state recruiting win Jeff Brohm wanted, and then some. The four-star wide receiver from Louisville flipped from Indiana to the Cardinals and has only strengthened his stock since, climbing into the top 50 nationally while putting together a dominant senior season that has plenty of programs paying attention.
Florida has already gotten a visit, and Browns calendar now includes stops at Kentucky, Oklahoma and Texas, which is where the real pressure starts for Louisville. Brohm landed the hometown headline commitment, but Browns final decision is far from settled, and the Cardinals now have to protect a prized local pledge against a national recruiting sweep that is still very much in motion. Floridas Playoff Hype Is Fading Faster Than Gators Fans Expected
Following Week 6, ESPNs FPI gave the college football picture a fresh shake-up, and Louisville was one of the teams climbing after a key win. The Cardinals moved up significantly in the rankings, a reminder that one good Saturday can change how the rest of a season looks in a hurry. The latest update also showed Notre Dame surging to No. 1, while two-loss LSU and Oregon still held top-10 spots, underscoring how unsettled the national field remains.
Florida, meanwhile, was among the teams trending the other direction in the FPI update, a sign that the Gators playoff optimism is starting to cool. The metric also tracks probabilities for reaching six wins and making the College Football Playoff, which gives these swings added weight as power-conference teams sort themselves out. For Louisville fans watching the bigger college football board, the shifting numbers only reinforce how quickly the pecking order can change. [Read more 🡒]
Ryan Conwell Just Gave Louisville Fans A Real Reason To Watch Miami
Ryan Conwells first taste of NBA preseason action with Miami gave Louisville fans something to track beyond their own roster for a change. After being selected by the Heat in the 2026 NBA Draft, the former Cardinal opened with a modest six-point debut before turning heads in his next outing, when he filled the box score with 22 points, nine assists, five rebounds and two steals.
For Louisville followers, the timing makes the subplot even better, because Miami is set to face Mikel Brown Jr. and the Brooklyn Nets in an upcoming game. Conwell has already said hes grateful for the chance and ready to contribute, and if he keeps flashing that kind of all-around impact, theres a good chance Cardinals fans will have reason to keep one eye on South Beach for a while.
