Louisville’s ACC opener arrives with the ESPN Football Power Index giving the Cardinals a narrow edge.
No. 24 Louisville, now 1-1, hosts No.
17 SMU on Saturday afternoon at L&N Stadium, and the FPI Matchup Predictor gives the Cardinals a 52.8% chance to win. SMU enters at 2-0 after beating UC Davis, 56-10, and the Mustangs already own an ACC victory from their season-opening win at Florida State.
Louisville is coming off a 59-13 victory over Villanova on Friday night, a result that gave the Cardinals their first win of the season. The latest FPI update kept Louisville at No. 28 and moved SMU down four spots to No. 24.
At the top of the national FPI rankings, Ohio State still sits first despite Texas’ comeback win over the Buckeyes on Saturday night. Texas is second, followed by Notre Dame, Georgia and Miami. Texas also holds the highest national championship probability at 19.7%, with Ohio State and Notre Dame next.
In the ACC, ESPN lists Miami first, with SMU, Virginia, Louisville and Pittsburgh rounding out the league’s top five.
ESPN says the Football Power Index is “a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is.
Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily.

The rest of Louisville’s schedule gives the Cardinals a favorable road map, at least on paper. ESPN lists their remaining strength of schedule at No. 64 and gives them an 88.9% chance of reaching at least six wins.
The Cardinals are favored in every remaining game on the FPI slate, starting with Saturday’s meeting with SMU and continuing through the end of the regular season.
Louisville is projected to beat Wake Forest on Sept. 26 with a 77.1% chance, then is favored at NC State on Oct. 3 at 71.0%. The Cardinals are also the FPI pick against Florida State on Oct. 9 at 69.4%, at Syracuse on Oct. 17 at 73.6%, and at home against Stanford on Oct. 31 with a 93.8% prediction.
The model also leans Louisville’s way at Georgia Tech on Nov. 7, where the Cardinals are given a 73.2% chance. Later in November, Louisville is projected to handle North Carolina on Nov. 14 at 60.8%, Pitt on Nov. 21 at 57.6%, and Kentucky on Nov. 28 at 67.4%.
The Cardinals’ early-season projections have already taken one hit. ESPN picked Ole Miss to beat Louisville in the opener in Nashville, and that played out with a 41-38 last-second field goal. Louisville is now 0-2 all-time against Ole Miss.
Against Villanova, though, the model was overwhelmingly correct. Louisville was given a 98.3% chance to win, and the Cardinals backed that up.
Villanova, ranked No. 18 in the FCS Top 25, came in at 1-1 after a 12-3 season that ended in the semifinals of the national playoffs. Louisville now leads that series 1-0.
SMU’s visit brings another familiar note for Louisville: the Cardinals are still looking for their first win against the Mustangs. Louisville is 0-4 all-time in the series, and SMU was picked No. 2 in the ACC Preseason Poll. ESPN’s game preview notes that both teams bring dynamic offenses to what could be a significant early conference matchup.
A few more games on the Cardinals’ schedule stand out in the FPI breakdown. Wake Forest was projected to finish 11th in the ACC preseason poll, while NC State was picked seventh. Florida State came in at No. 11 in the preseason poll and has not faced Louisville since the 2023 ACC Championship Game, a 16-6 Seminoles win.
Syracuse was picked 14th in the ACC preseason poll, Stanford last, Georgia Tech fifth, North Carolina 15th and Pitt ninth. Louisville has the edge in several of those series histories, including 7-3 all-time against Wake Forest, 9-4 against NC State, 13-8 against Syracuse, 5-3 against North Carolina and 11-11 with Pitt. The Cardinals are 0-1 against Stanford and tied 2-2 with Georgia Tech.
Louisville’s trip to Kentucky closes the regular season, and the Cardinals will be chasing a third straight win in the rivalry. Louisville won 41-0 last season. Kentucky leads the all-time series 19-17, while Louisville holds a 17-13 edge since the rivalry resumed in 1994.

Louisville got the season moving in the right direction with its first win over Villanova, and now the focus shifts to a Week 3 meeting with No. 17 SMU that already feels like a meaningful early-season barometer. The frustration for Louisville fans comes from where the game landed on the TV schedule.
