Louisville basketball is facing some changes as Khani Rooths, a dynamic presence on the court, is set to enter the Transfer Portal. This news follows closely on the heels of Sananda Fru's similar announcement, marking a significant shift for the Cardinals.
Rooths, a 6-foot-10 forward known for his energy and athleticism, has been a key player for Louisville. As a former top-35 recruit, his potential was evident from the start. Despite averaging modest numbers-3.3 points and 3.0 rebounds in his first season-Rooths provided crucial depth, especially after injuries plagued the team.
This past season, Rooths stepped up his game, starting in two contests and logging nearly 16 minutes per game. He showcased his ability to drive to the basket and contribute on both ends, averaging 5.3 points and 4.3 rebounds. His standout performances included three double-doubles and a career-high 20-point game in the season opener.
However, Rooths struggled with his shooting, particularly from three-point range. Despite improving his overall field goal percentage from 39.3% to 44.9%, his three-point shooting remained below par, hovering around 22-23% over two seasons.
While Rooths' departure may not be a complete surprise to fans, it does leave a significant gap in Louisville’s lineup. With two key players now headed for the portal, Coach Kelsey faces the challenge of reinforcing the frontcourt, an area that was already a concern last season.
As the Transfer Portal opens on April 7, the Cardinals will be keenly watching for opportunities to bolster their roster and maintain their competitive edge.
