VERSAILLES, Ky. - Darrian Tomlin is heading into his senior year at Woodford County with a lot already on his résumé and one more season left to add to it.
The Louisville commit has become one of the top linebackers in the Bluegrass, and after a breakout junior campaign, he’s preparing for a final run that still feels unreal to him.
“It hasn't, to be honest," Tomlin told Cardinal Authority. "It just came so fast. When they say cherish all your years, they mean it.”
Tomlin’s junior season was the kind that changes a player’s profile. After sitting out his sophomore year in 2024 because of an injury, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound standout helped Woodford County go 12-2 and reach the KHSAA 5A state semifinals. He made noise everywhere, piling up 1,550 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns on offense while also recording 19 tackles, including 4.5 for loss, on defense.
This fall, though, his role is shifting. Tomlin said he expects to spend much more time at linebacker and only spot duty at running back when needed against bigger opponents.
"I'm going to be more of an emergency running back against big teams," Tomlin said. "I'm going to be able to get reps."
On defense, his mindset is blunt and aggressive.
"kill, or be killed," he said.
And because he has spent so much time carrying the ball, he believes that background helps him now when he’s reading opposing backs and attacking gaps.
"It gives me opportunities to read a running back better, like fill the gap," Tomlin said. "I know what gap he's going to. It's just a mind game, to be honest."
Tomlin’s commitment to Louisville came in June, and the connection with linebackers coach Adam Mueller has only grown since then.
"I'll be honest, it's a family bond," Tomlin said. "They bring you together.
It's all like family. I have a very good and strong relationship with him.
I really like him. I really like all their coaches.
"I'm pretty familiar with the staff. Vince Marrow, of course, and Coach Ivey, Coach Mueller.
They're all really good guys and they really family guys. They're really big on family."
Even with that commitment in place, Tomlin said the process is not completely finished.
"Not yet," Tomlin said. "I'm going to go wherever I feel like is home and wherever I feel like whoever needs me the best and can put me in the best situation to make it to the next level."
Along with Louisville, Tomlin has also reported offers from Miami, Kent State and Toledo.
