The Doak Walker Award’s preseason watch list for the 2026 season landed with one glaring absence: Isaac Brown.
Brown, who finished the 2025 season with an electric 8.75 yards per carry and 884 yards in just nine games after a hamstring injury limited his availability, was left off the 60-player list despite a strong resume that already includes a spot on the Maxwell Award Watch List. He’s also the fifth betting choice on a number of gambling platforms at 11-1 to win the Doak Walker Award.
The omission stands out even more given the broader context around the ACC and Louisville. The conference placed 12 running backs on the Doak Walker preseason list, and Brown is also a preseason first-team All-ACC selection. Still, his name did not make the cut.
A source within the University of Louisville confirmed that both Isaac Brown and Keyjuan Brown were submitted by UofL as candidates for the award. Even so, neither player appeared on the preseason 60-man list, despite what the source described as an on-time submission.
That leaves an obvious question hanging over the release: how does a tandem that combined for 1,588 rushing yards on 197 carries get overlooked? Or, put another way, why weren’t the Cardinal backs considered worthy of inclusion?
There is still time for that to change. The in-season deadline for inclusion comes in October, giving Isaac and Keyjuan Brown a chance to make their case after being left out this August.

Louisville Safeties Sound Ready For A Massive Ole Miss Test
Louisvilles safety room is one of the more interesting parts of camp as the Cardinals get ready for a season opener that will arrive with immediate pressure against No. 9 Ole Miss. TJ Banks, Kaleb Beasley, Blake Ruffin and Antonio Watts all offered a window into where the group stands, and the early read is that the position has leaned on continuity, communication and a shared sense of purpose as the defense ramps up for a major early test.
Watts, in particular, has become a notable part of the conversation after working his way back from the season-ending knee injury that cut short his year a season ago. He said he is back to full health, and his presence gives Louisville another experienced piece in a secondary that has talked throughout camp about its unity and energy. With Ole Miss first on the schedule, the Cardinals are counting on that back end to be steady from the start. [Read more 🡒]
AJ Green Gives Louisvilles Defensive Front A Huge 2026 Boost
AJ Greens decision to return gives Louisvilles defensive front a major piece to build around heading into 2026. The redshirt junior from Atlanta turned in a productive 2025 season, finishing with four sacks, four quarterback hurries, a forced fumble, a blocked kick, six tackles for loss and 31 total tackles, the kind of all-around impact that can anchor a pass rush and change field position in a hurry.
For a Cardinals defense looking to keep its front seven disruptive, Greens return is the kind of development that matters well beyond one players production. Louisville also continues to lean on Ryan Zimmerman in a different role, with the redshirt sophomore quarterback from Carmel, Ind., expected to help steer the offense through hand signals and play calls even if he is not likely to see much game action in 2026. Louisville's New QB Faces One Big Test In Jeff Brohm's Offense
Jeff Brohms quarterback search has followed a familiar script since he took over at Louisville, and this fall it looks like Lincoln Kienholz is next in line to run the show. The transfer has settled into Brohms demanding offense and is expected to lead a program that has continued to win while cycling through quarterbacks, a reminder that stability under center has not been a requirement for success in this stretch.
Louisville is one of four ACC teams to reach 20 or more wins while using a fourth different starting quarterback since 2023, which says plenty about how the Cardinals have managed to keep moving. Kienholz still carries the intrigue of a player with years of eligibility left, but the real test now is whether he can turn adaptation into command once the season puts the offense in motion.
