Louisville Fans Finally Get The Mikel Brown Jr. Moment They've Waited For

Louisville fans eagerly anticipate the showdown between former Cardinals teammates Mikel Brown Jr. and Ryan Conwell as Brown makes his impactful preseason debut with the Nets.

Louisville fans finally get the matchup they’ve been waiting for: Mikel Brown Jr. is set to make his Brooklyn Nets preseason debut Wednesday night against the Miami Heat, and that means a first look at the former Cardinal in a pro jersey against his old Louisville teammate, Ryan Conwell.

Brown has been sidelined for Brooklyn’s first three preseason games, including Monday’s meeting with Washington, but Nets coach Jordi Fernández said Tuesday that the No. 6 overall pick is expected to play against Miami. Nets reporter Brian Lewis posted the update that Brown “is expected to debut Wednesday at the #Heat.”

For Louisville supporters, the timing makes this even better. Brown and Conwell were both part of the Cardinals’ 2025-26 team under Pat Kelsey, and both guards led Louisville in scoring before hearing their names called in the 2026 NBA Draft. Conwell, meanwhile, has already started making noise with Miami as he works to carve out a role off the bench.

Brown’s lone season in Louisville gave fans plenty to remember. He averaged 18.2 points per game and caught fire in the second half before a back injury against Clemson knocked him out of the ACC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.

The Nets still used the lottery pick on him at No. 6 overall, and he’s already shown plenty in Summer League. Brown appeared in four games and put up 15 points, 4 assists, 1.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals per contest while shooting 34.6 percent from three. His debut in that setting turned heads right away: 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting and 3-of-6 from deep.

Conwell has been productive in his own preseason work, too. Through two games, he’s averaging 14 points and 5.5 assists, and his latest outing was his best yet with 22 points and nine assists.

Brooklyn and Miami will see plenty more of each other once the regular season starts, so this won’t be the only Brown-Conwell reunion. Still, as Brown’s first preseason action and a head-to-head with a former Louisville teammate, Wednesday night is the one Cardinals fans have circled.

Louisville's Syracuse Prep Starts With One Huge Quarterback Question

Louisvilles trip to Syracuse comes with the usual defensive homework, but the biggest item on the checklist is still the Oranges quarterback situation. Steve Angeli opened the season as the starter, but injuries and uneven play have pushed Syracuse into a carousel at the position, with Malachi Nelson, Amari Odom and Danny Lauter all getting snaps as the staff tries to keep the offense moving.

The uncertainty under center has made the rest of the roster even more important, especially a run game built around Tylik Hill and a receiving group topped by Umari Hatcher, who leads the ACC in touchdowns. For Louisville, the challenge is simple enough to say and harder to solve: prepare for a Syracuse offense that can lean on multiple looks, while still waiting to see which quarterback actually gets the first real shot to settle things down. Florida State Faces A Telling Rivalry Test At Miami

Florida State heads into a charged Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at Miami coming off a rough stretch, and the timing does not make things any easier. The Seminoles are trying to stop the slide while also dealing with the dismissal of freshman cornerback Chuck Kennon for conduct detrimental to the team, a move that adds another layer of turbulence to a roster already looking for answers.

Miami, meanwhile, comes in rested after a bye week and expects some key defensive players back in time for the rivalry test. Both teams lean on strong rushing attacks, which should make the line of scrimmage a focal point in a game that already carries plenty of weight for the ACC race and the pride that comes with a rivalry stage. Louisville's Next Test Comes With One Big Syracuse Unknown

Louisville comes into its next ACC test with momentum after erasing an early deficit and rolling past Florida State, a win sparked by Isaac Browns career night on the ground. The Cardinals have looked more settled since Jeff Brohm turned over playcalling duties to offensive coordinator Brian Brohm, a move that helped sharpen the offense at just the right time.

Syracuse, meanwhile, brings plenty of uncertainty into the matchup because of its quarterback situation. Fran Brown said the Orange plan to make their starting quarterback decision within 48 hours, and with multiple injuries at the position, Louisville may not know exactly what kind of offense it will be preparing for until late in the week. For a Cardinals team trying to build on a breakthrough performance, that is the one variable that could shape the entire game. [Read more 🡒]
