Louisville Faces A Tricky Road Test At Syracuse With Plenty At Stake

Louisville aims to overcome road challenges and an injury-hit lineup as they face Syracuse, hoping to turn betting odds into a much-needed win.

Louisville heads to Syracuse on Saturday night with a chance to stack wins for the first time this season and, just as important, to finally get something done away from home.

Jeff Brohm’s team is 3-3 after a season that has already swung hard in both directions. Louisville has flashed real upside with an upset of SMU and a game that went right down to the wire against Ole Miss, but the Cardinals also stumbled through their next two conference games before last week’s huge win over Florida State gave the group a much-needed jolt. Now they get the 2-3 Orange at the JMA Wireless Dome, with Louisville installed as a heavy favorite.

That road number matters. The Cardinals are 0-2 away from home this season, and one of those losses came at NC State a couple of weeks ago.

Saturday offers a clean shot at changing that trend while pushing toward win No. 4.

The injury list is a real part of the story here, especially for Louisville. The Cardinals have a long report heading into the game, with TE Travis Egan, P Jacob Baker, OT Bryten Close, OL Sam Secrest, DL Sam Dawson, DB Antonio Watts, TE Hamilton Atkins, DB DJ Waller Jr. and OL Anwar O'neal all out.

DL Micah Carter and RB Keyjuan Brown are questionable. OL James Glover-Tyson and T Dylan Mesman are also listed.

Syracuse has quarterback questions of its own. Pete Thamel noted on social media that Amari Odom is out, Steve Angeli is questionable and last week’s starter, Malachi Nelson, is also questionable. Brown is also questionable for Louisville.

The series history leans toward the Cardinals overall. Louisville and Syracuse have played 21 times, with Louisville holding a 13-8 edge. In conference play, the Cardinals have been the better side as well, going 6-2 across eight meetings.

Still, Syracuse has had the last word more recently. The Orange beat Louisville 31-7 in 2022 and rolled to a 54-23 win in 2018. At Syracuse, the matchup has been even overall at 5-5, though Louisville has controlled the recent stretch, winning seven of the last 10 and three of the last four.

Louisville Just Took A Tough Recruiting Hit With Pat Kelsey Watching

Louisvilles recruiting board took a hit this week when five-star small forward Asa Montgomery canceled his upcoming official visits to the Cardinals and Arizona, according to reports. Montgomery remains one of the most coveted prospects in the country, and his original list of planned stops showed just how wide a net he was casting, with Louisville among a group that also included LSU, Florida, UConn, Providence, North Carolina and Duke.

For Pat Kelsey and his staff, losing the chance to host Montgomery only tightens the squeeze in a recruitment that already had plenty of heavyweight competition. Duke is now viewed as the favorite to land him, and with Louisville out of the immediate visit picture, the Cardinals will have to keep pressing from the sidelines and hope the conversation is not over yet. Louisvilles Fourth Quarter Over Florida State Looks Even Better On Film

Louisvilles fourth-quarter surge against Florida State looked decisive in real time, and the film only sharpened the picture. The Cardinals made timely adjustments on offense, with Lincoln Kienholz settling in and the run game providing the kind of balance that forced the Seminoles to defend every inch of the field. Isaac Brown and Braxton Jennings both showed up in key spots, giving Louisville the sort of complementary production that can turn a tight game into a statement finish.

On the other side of the ball, the tape highlighted how well Louisvilles defense managed the late-game pressure. Coverage sacks helped squeeze Florida States options, while the Cardinals positioning made it difficult for the Seminoles to find clean answers when the game started to tilt. The broader takeaway is simple enough: this was not just a matter of momentum, but of execution and coaching decisions showing up at the right time, which makes the fourth quarter look even more convincing the second time around. Louisville Has A Real Chance To Prove The Florida State Win Was Real

Louisville heads to Syracuse on Saturday night with a good chance to show the Florida State win was more than a one-off. The Cardinals have the kind of setup every solid team wants in October: a road game, a conference opponent and a chance to follow one impressive performance with another against a side that is working with a backup quarterback. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, and there should be plenty of attention on whether Louisville can carry over the energy and execution that stood out last time out.

CardinalAuthoritys staff expects this one to be shaped by both sides of the ball, with Louisvilles offense trying to keep recent form rolling and the defense looking to take advantage of the matchup in front of it. It is the sort of game that can tell you a lot about a team, not just because of the opponent, but because of how it responds on the road after a big win. If Louisville looks sharp again, the Florida State result starts to feel like a real turning point instead of a nice September memory. [Read more 🡒]
