Louisville heads into Saturday’s trip to Raleigh trying to steady itself in ACC play, and the Cardinals may have to do it without a couple of key pieces.
The Cardinals, now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference, slid out of the Top 25 after last week’s 30-27 loss to Wake Forest at home. That defeat knocked Louisville from No. 16 and put a little more pressure on a road date with NC State, which is also sitting at 2-2 but already owns a 41-31 home win over Appalachian State after opening ACC play with a loss.
The biggest concern for Louisville is the health of dual-threat quarterback Lincoln Kienholz. Coach Jeff Brohm said Monday that Kienholz was injured late in the loss to Wake Forest and called him a game-time decision, without getting into details.
Kienholz has been the engine of the offense, ranking fourth in the ACC with 1,140 passing yards and tying for the conference lead with six rushing touchdowns. With him directing the attack, Louisville is averaging 486.3 yards and 41.2 points per game, both marks good for 18th nationally.
The Cardinals also could be missing starting safety Koen Entringer. He was a late scratch before the Wake Forest game, and Brohm didn’t sound optimistic about his chances of returning this week.
That secondary will need to clean things up quickly after Wake Forest hit Louisville with explosive plays of 31, 48 and 77 yards that either became touchdowns or set one up. Louisville is allowing 240.3 passing yards per game, a number that leaves it tied with San Diego State for No. 110 nationally.
"I won't elaborate too much on exactly what happened, but it's a little bit different every time," Brohm said regarding the secondary issues that have been prevalent all season. "So, we have to make sure that everyone's on the same page."
NC State coach Dave Doeren sees a defense that can still make life difficult, though, pointing to Louisville’s conference-best plus-6 turnover margin.
"They've gone several halves where they don't give up anything, and we've got to do a great job executing and taking advantage of our opportunities," Doeren said.
For the Wolfpack, Keenan Jackson has been the top target with 19 catches for 295 yards, and his four receiving touchdowns are tied for second in the ACC. Quarterback CJ Bailey, a third-year starter, has thrown for 893 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 67.3% of his passes.
Defensively, NC State is leaning on linebacker Popo Aguirre, whose 37 total tackles rank third in the ACC.

Louisville Defense Faces A Real Test Against NC States Offense
NC State heads into its meeting with Louisville sitting at 2-2, but the record only tells part of the story for an offense that has shown it can stress a defense in different ways. Quarterback CJ Bailey has given the Wolfpack a steady presence, while the scheme also leans on the run game and a receiver group that can create problems after the catch. The offensive line has had its share of challenges in recent games, which makes the way NC State handles protection and run blocking a key part of this matchup.
From Louisvilles side, the challenge is less about one spotlight player than about matching up with an offense that can attack from multiple angles. Duke Scott has been a steady part of that ground game, and Keenan Jackson adds another layer as a target Louisville has to account for on every snap. If the Cardinals can disrupt the Wolfpack up front and make Bailey play from behind the chains, they can shape the game to their advantage, but NC State has enough pieces to make this a real test. Louisville Just Made This 5-Star Recruitment A Real Battle
King Gibsons recruitment is starting to look like the kind of high-level battle that can shape a class, and Louisville has put itself firmly in the mix. The five-star guard in the 2027 class has been on the road with official visits, and the Cardinals have emerged as one of the schools drawing real momentum as his process moves deeper into the fall.
Gibson has not made a commitment yet, but the picture is getting tighter and more competitive. Louisville is contending with Arkansas, Providence and LSU, and the recent wave of visits has only added to the intrigue around where he might land next. For the Cardinals, the encouraging sign is that they are still very much in the conversation as the race begins to narrow. [Read more 🡒]
Pat Kelseys Push For Elite Guard Could Change Louisvilles Odds
Pat Kelseys recruiting push is starting to show up in the kind of conversations Louisville wants to be having with elite backcourt talent. The Cardinals are in the mix for 5-star point guard Cayden Daughtry, one of the nations top high school prospects, and his visit to campus has put Louisville more squarely on the map as Kelsey works to raise the programs ceiling.
Daughtry has already seen several other programs and is expected to keep making official visits this fall, so the race is far from settled. Still, Kelseys direct approach appears to have moved Louisville from a name on the list to a school worth serious attention, which is exactly the sort of traction the Cardinals need if they want to change their odds in the backcourt.
