Louisville got the kind of Monday update it wanted as it prepares for a major ACC test against No. 16 SMU.
After the Cardinals rolled past Villanova 59-13 to pick up their first win of the season, attention shifted quickly to Saturday’s top-25 matchup at L&N Stadium. And with Louisville trying to beat SMU for the first time since joining the ACC, the status of running back Keyjuan Brown became a key storyline.
Jeff Brohm offered a positive read on Brown, who left Saturday’s game early and did not return in the second half after finishing with one carry for 12 yards.
“I think, Keyjuan, we are hopeful he will be back for this Saturday’s game,” stated Brohm on Brown. “I am hopeful that will happen, and I will anticipate that it will happen.”
That’s a meaningful development for Louisville, especially with Brown playing an important role in a loaded backfield. He stepped into a bigger spotlight last season when Isaac Brown and Duke Watson were sidelined, and he made the most of it by averaging 7.3 yards per carry on 704 yards.
Brown closed last season strong, topping 94 rushing yards in each of his final five games. Over his last three, he went for 136, 135 and 112.
He has already been productive this season, too. Brown has eight carries for 68 yards in 2026, including a seven-carry, 56-yard outing against No. 9 Ole Miss in Week 1.
The timing matters. Louisville enters Saturday averaging 48.5 points per game and 552 total yards per game, and SMU comes in at 2-0 after wins over Florida State and UC Davis. The Cardinals know they’ll need their run game firing if they want to finally get over the hump against the Mustangs.
Louisville and SMU are set for a 3:30 p.m. local time kickoff on ESPN 2, with Brown trending in the right direction at just the right moment.
