Louisville Cardinals Eye Monster Talent to End Sweet Sixteen Drought

Louisville basketball sets its sights on top transfer Stefan Vaaks to rebuild a depleted roster for the 2026 season.

Louisville basketball is diving headfirst into the offseason, and Pat Kelsey and his team have their work cut out for them. With no commitments for 2026, the Cardinals are eyeing another impactful Transfer Portal class to make their return to the NCAA Tournament and break their Sweet Sixteen drought.

Last offseason, Louisville pulled off a top-tier Transfer Portal class, ranked third overall, by securing three 4-star transfers. Now, with multiple starters leaving due to eligibility, Kelsey is gearing up for another crucial recruitment period. The Cardinals are set to lose four of their five starters, along with key bench contributors Kobe Rodgers and Aly Khalifs.

As the Cardinals look to rebuild their roster, the guard position is a primary focus for Kelsey. Replacing Ryan Conwell, Isaac McKneely, and Mikel Brown Jr. is no small task.

Hopes are high for Adrian Wooley to return and possibly take on the point guard role. But the spotlight is on Stefan Vaaks, Kelsey's top target in the Transfer Portal.

Kelsey, known for his love of the three-point shot, faces the challenge of replacing his top shooters from last season. Vaaks, a 6-foot-7 freshman, could bring much-needed height and versatility to the backcourt alongside Wooley. More than just a sharpshooter, Vaaks has the potential to dominate games.

Currently, Vaaks is the consensus No. 1 player in the Transfer Portal and a 4-star transfer. His freshman year at Providence was impressive, averaging 15.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists, with shooting percentages of 40.8% from the floor and 35% from beyond the arc.

Vaaks showcased his shooting prowess in the Big East Tournament, hitting a season-high eight three-pointers and scoring 28 points against Butler, followed by a 23-point performance with five threes against St. John’s. Throughout the season, he consistently made an impact from deep, hitting three or more threes in 17 games, five or more in six games, and even reaching six or more in one game and eight or more in another.

With a pressing need for scorers, Louisville is expected to be a major player in the Transfer Portal, and Kelsey’s pursuit of the Providence standout could be pivotal for the Cardinals' future success.
