Louisville football’s first real spotlight game is coming fast, and Jeff Brohm is making sure nobody around the program treats it like a warmup.
The Cardinals are 50 days out from their Week 1 meeting with Ole Miss, a Sept. 6 showdown in Nashville, Tenn. It’s the kind of opener that usually doesn’t show up on the schedule for a Power Four team, and Brohm made it clear at ACC Media Day in Charlotte that Louisville is leaning into the challenge instead of backing away from it.
“I think it is just a great challenge. What goes into it is that we have to prepare.
You have to get ready to go, and you have to step up game one, and there can’t be any easing into the season. You have to bring your best,” stated Brohm.
“Our team knows, right off the bat, we have to play great football.”
That’s the tone Louisville is carrying into a game that looks like it could carry top-25 weight on both sides. Ole Miss is being viewed as a likely top-15 team, while Louisville is also showing up in way-too-early top-25 conversations. ESPN has the Rebels as high as No. 8 in its summer rankings.
For Brohm, this opener stands out because it’s a clear step up in degree of difficulty. Since he arrived in Louisville, the Cardinals haven’t opened with anything close to this. They faced Georgia Tech in Week 1 in 2023, then Austin Peay in 2024, and Eastern Kentucky this past season.
Ole Miss brings a very different level of pressure. The Rebels are coming off a historic season that included their first College Football Playoff appearance, the most wins in program history, a 13-win campaign and a trip to the CFP semifinals. Trinidad Chambliss led that run and is expected to be one of the top quarterbacks in the country after throwing for nearly 4,000 yards with 22 touchdowns and just three interceptions.
That’s the backdrop for Louisville’s opener: a ranked-opponent type of stage, a national spotlight, and a chance to make a statement right away. If the Cardinals want to position themselves for a CFP run, Sept. 6 is the kind of game that can set the tone fast.
