Jeff Brohm didn’t hide how he felt about Tyler Shough’s latest jump on the NFL stage.
The Louisville coach had plenty to say at his Sept. 21 news conference after Shough helped the Saints knock off Lamar Jackson and the Ravens, 24-17, in Baltimore. It was a meeting of two former Louisville quarterbacks, and Shough came out with the edge.
New Orleans trailed into the fourth quarter before ripping off 15 unanswered points to grab its first win of the season. Shough was central to the turnaround, finishing 27-for-34 for 252 passing yards and two total touchdowns, one rushing and one throwing.
“Really happy for him,” UofL head coach Jeff Brohm said of Shough at his Sept. 21 news conference. “He was a great worker.
He wanted to make a difference. He was hungry.
He wanted to stay healthy, prove that. He did a great job for us.
And I think he went to a great spot where they were invested in him, but at the same time he didn't have to start at the very beginning, which I thought was a good thing.
“I think he's a big strong quarterback who can see the field, he can make throws, he's got enough athleticism to escape and make plays. He's on a good young team with a good young head coach that they're finding ways to get wins.
That's a big win for him. I love Lamar and he's fantastic as well.
And he has the ability to carry his team every week. So I didn't get to see the whole game, but I heard it was a good one.
I'm happy for Tyler that he's had this success because he's worked hard for it.”
Jackson still put up his own numbers in the loss. The two-time NFL MVP completed 21 of 31 passes for 235 yards, a touchdown and an interception, while adding 34 rushing yards on four carries.
Through two weeks, Shough has surged to the top of the league in passing yards with 662 and is completing 68.9% of his throws. Jackson sits sixth with 559 passing yards.
The last Louisville quarterback to finish a season leading the NFL in passing yards was Johnny Unitas, who did it four straight years from 1957 through 1960 with the Baltimore Colts.
