Louisville isn’t ruling out a late-summer boost to its roster.
As the Cardinals opened fall camp on Thursday, Jeff Brohm said the program is still watching the evolving fifth-year eligibility situation closely and could add players if everything lines up.
“Yes, we have some targets there,” Brohm said. “For us, we're making sure that this ruling and the declaration of how this is going to work becomes fully clear. We're in position to do what we need to do, as long as everything gets approved by our conference, our administration.”
The backdrop is a recent ruling from Colorado Judge Charlotte Sweeney, who granted a class-wide preliminary injunction last week requiring the NCAA to declare eligible all high school class of 2022 athletes who used up four seasons of eligibility this spring. On Sunday, Sweeney clarified the scope of that injunction, saying that while those athletes are being granted a fifth year, the order does not block transfer rules, roster caps, rev share caps, and similar limits.
For Louisville, that means the door is open, but only if the process stays clean and the approvals come through.
“We want to make sure that we're on the up and up and we're doing things right, but there are a couple of young men that would fit that category for us that we've been in contact with,” Brohm said. “As this continues to be allowed at other places and we don't think this is going to be overturned, we will proceed down that route for sure.”
The Cardinals are staying patient for now, but they’re clearly keeping a spot on the radar for fifth-year help if the ruling settles in their favor.
