The mother of NFL veteran Calais Campbell was found dead Tuesday in her Atlanta townhome, and a day later police charged his older brother in connection with her death.
Ciarre Campbell, 41, was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a knife in the death of 71-year-old Nateal Campbell, according to reports from multiple national and local news outlets.
The Campbell family acknowledged Nateal’s death in a statement released through ESPN, but did not mention Ciarre’s arrest. They wrote:
“We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell.
While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”
Atlanta news outlets reported that the arrest warrants describe a violent killing, though investigators have not yet said what happened or what may have led to it.
Calais Campbell, now an 18-year NFL veteran, spent one season with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023. He played for the Jaguars from 2017 to 2019 and starred at the University of Miami in the mid-2000s.
While with the Jaguars, Campbell was named the 2019 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. He currently plays for the Baltimore Ravens.
Campbell turns 40 on Sept. 1 and is set to become the sixth player in NFL history to play into his 40s.

Louisville Finally Has The Missing Piece Pat Kelsey Needed Most
Pat Kelsey has already changed the feel of Louisville basketball by dragging the defense from the basement of the major conferences into the national conversation. The Cardinals have gone from a team trying to survive possessions to one built to speed opponents up, and that shift has come from a clear emphasis on length, athleticism and a tougher back line around the rim.
The next step is making that pressure sustainable, which is why the latest offseason work mattered so much. Louisville wanted more size behind its perimeter aggression, more bodies that could erase mistakes, and more confidence for guards to extend the defense without paying for it at the basket. If that final layer settles in, Kelseys group may finally have the kind of balance that lets its pace and defensive edge work together instead of one covering for the other. [Read more 🡒]
Louisvilles Preseason Buzz Just Got Another Major ESPN Stamp
Louisvilles preseason profile got another national nod this week, as ESPN kept the Cardinals at No. 13 in its updated Way-Too-Early Top 25 for the second straight month. The ranking keeps Pat Kelseys program firmly in the early conversation and gives the ACC another well-placed team in a poll that already has five league schools inside the mix.
The buzz around the Cardinals is easy to understand. ESPN pointed to Louisvilles nation-leading transfer portal class and a Top 15 high school group, a combination that has pushed expectations up before a game has been played. Kelsey has embraced the attention while also stressing the work still ahead, and the next challenge is turning that offseason momentum into something that lasts once the season starts. [Read more 🡒]
Karter Knox Just Added A New Twist To The Louisville Kentucky Rivalry
Louisvilles offseason roster makeover brought in six transfers, and Karter Knox might be the one who gives the Cardinals renewed Kentucky rivalry an extra layer of intrigue. The former Arkansas wing arrived with plenty of pedigree as a former five-star recruit, and he also comes with a family connection that naturally puts his move in sharper focus around the state.
Knox is the younger brother of Kevin Knox, who starred at Kentucky before becoming a first-round NBA draft pick, so his choice to land in Louisville adds a personal twist to one of college basketballs most familiar matchups. The next chance for that storyline to surface comes Dec. 12 in Lexington, when the Cardinals and Wildcats meet with more than just bragging rights hanging in the balance. [Read more 🡒]
