Georgia’s backfield took a hit Tuesday when Kirby Smart confirmed that transfer running back Dante Dowdell is out with an injury that could keep him sidelined for a substantial stretch.
Smart addressed the situation at SEC Media Days and didn’t offer specifics on what happened, but he made clear the Bulldogs are dealing with something serious. Last week, rumors had already been swirling that Dowdell was hurt in an ATV accident. On Tuesday, Smart stopped short of confirming that detail, but he did say the team is waiting on more clarity.
"We're praying for him and his family,” Smart said via 247Sports.com. “We expect a full recovery, but the outlook right now is we're waiting to see.
We'll go day to day with him and see. I hate that for him and his family, but he's a great kid.
It's been tough. A lot of our players have been over there to see him.
It's just one of those really tough situations."
The timing is rough for Georgia because Dowdell was expected to be a meaningful piece of the offense this fall. Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens are projected to lead the running back room, and both were productive last season. But Dowdell was supposed to bring a different element.
He arrived in Athens after stops at Oregon, Nebraska and Kentucky, and he already has 16 touchdowns on his college résumé. That spring G-Day showing only added to the buzz: 61 rushing yards and a touchdown on six carries had plenty of fans looking forward to seeing what he could do in a bigger role.
Now, that role is on hold. With the season less than 50 days away, it seems unlikely Dowdell will be ready for the opener, and there’s even a chance he could miss the entire year. Georgia has enough depth to keep moving, but Dowdell was projected to be the Bulldogs’ short-yardage hammer, the kind of back you lean on when the yards get tight and the defense knows what’s coming.
Smart isn’t shutting the door on a return later in the season, but there’s no clean answer yet on how long this will last.
And Dowdell isn’t the only injury concern hanging over Georgia. Auburn transfer Amaris Williams tore his ACL during spring ball, and that was already ruled season-ending. Williams has said he’ll do everything he can to make it back by the end of the year, but that kind of recovery in that timeframe is a long shot.
For Georgia, the injury list is already starting to pile up before the season even begins, and that’s not the kind of momentum any contender wants heading into August.
