Chris Bell is on a remarkable journey, just three and a half months post-surgery for a torn ligament in his knee. The former University of Louisville standout wide receiver faced this setback during a game against SMU in November, a moment that prematurely ended his impressive college career. Yet, Bell's resolve remains unshaken as he sets his sights on the NFL Draft.
Despite missing the NFL Combine and Louisville's Pro Day, Bell is projected to be a top-three round pick in the upcoming draft. His absence from physical workouts hasn't deterred his progress; instead, he's been actively engaging with NFL teams through numerous Zoom calls and visits to franchises in New Orleans, Buffalo, and Cleveland, with a trip to Philadelphia next on his itinerary.
Reflecting on the process, Bell said, "This has been a great experience. I’m just trying to absorb it all, meeting with teams and taking it one step at a time."
While Bell acknowledges he can't change the past few months, he remains eager to showcase his skills. "This would have been my money maker," he admitted, referring to the missed Pro Day.
Concerns about his route running were something he hoped to address, but he trusts in the bigger picture. "It's all in God's plan, part of my story."
Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 220 pounds, Bell was a force in the ACC last season. His injury came in the third quarter against SMU, following a catch from quarterback Deuce Adams. Despite the setback, Bell's support system of family and friends has been crucial in keeping him focused and motivated.
"This whole experience has been a blessing," Bell shared. "Coming from where I did, not many have had this opportunity."
With teams expressing admiration for his game film, Bell’s excitement for the future is palpable. "They love my run-after-catch ability, especially at my size. They see me as a top guy in that area."
Hailing from Yazoo City, Mississippi, Bell's senior year stats speak volumes: 72 catches, 917 yards, and six touchdowns, including three consecutive 100-yard games. Over his college career, he amassed 151 catches for 2,166 yards and 12 touchdowns.
As the draft approaches, Bell's journey from college star to NFL hopeful is a testament to resilience and determination. His story is far from over, and the next chapter is eagerly awaited.
