Zach Ertz Gives Eagles A Veteran Option Rams Have To Respect

Zach Ertz's return to Lincoln Financial Field brings a mix of nostalgia and opportunity as the veteran tight end steps up for the Eagles against the Rams amidst key absences.

Zach Ertz’s return to Lincoln Financial Field came with a familiar jersey, a familiar sideline, and a very different chapter of his career.

On Sunday, the veteran tight end was spotted walking the field before the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams, soaking in the stadium atmosphere ahead of kickoff. The Eagles shared video of the 35-year-old in No. 86, with his green helmet and white pants on as he moved across the turf with the stands and lighting towers in the background.

That quiet pregame moment followed a fast-moving return to Philadelphia. Ertz signed with the Eagles practice squad on September 22 after starting tight end Dallas Goedert went down with an MCL sprain in Week 2.

Sunday marked Ertz’s second elevation from the practice squad; he was also elevated for the Week 3 loss in Chicago. In that Monday night debut, he played 19 offensive snaps, caught one pass for nine yards on two targets, and logged his first game action since he tore his ACL and LCL with the Washington Commanders on December 7, 2025.

The Eagles came into the day at 2-1 and trying to bounce back from a 27-7 loss to the Bears. They also had to work around a long list of inactives: right tackle Lane Johnson (personal), wide receiver DeVonta Smith (hamstring), linebacker Zack Baun (concussion), tight end Dallas Goedert (knee), safety Marcus Epps (groin), wide receiver Hollywood Brown (ankle) and offensive tackle Fred Johnson (knee).

With Goedert and Smith out, Ertz was positioned for a bigger role alongside Johnny Mundt, E.J. Jenkins and fellow practice-squad elevation Josiah Deguara.

Ertz’s history in Philadelphia is the kind that still lands. The Eagles drafted him in the second round in 2013 out of Stanford, and he spent the first eight-plus seasons of his career here.

During that stretch, he made three Pro Bowls from 2017 through 2019 and caught the touchdown that put Philadelphia ahead late in Super Bowl LII. In 2018, he set the then-NFL record for receptions by a tight end with 116 catches for 1,163 yards and eight touchdowns.

He still sits near the top of the franchise’s all-time receiving lists from that first run with the team.

After being traded to the Arizona Cardinals in mid-2021, Ertz later played for the Commanders in 2024 and 2025. He entered Week 4 with 826 career receptions for 8,601 yards and 57 touchdowns in 182 regular-season games, and he remained 11 catches away from the Eagles’ franchise receptions record held by Harold Carmichael.

The Rams also came in shorthanded, missing defensive tackle Aaron Donald (back) and other contributors, though quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Puka Nacua were available. Kickoff was set for 1 p.m. ET on FOX at Lincoln Financial Field, with Ertz on the active roster and in position to give offensive coordinator Sean Mannion another experienced target as Philadelphia tried to make do without Smith and Goedert.

Matthew Stafford Gives Rams Fans A Bigger Concern Than This Win

Matthew Staffords afternoon against the Eagles ended the way the Rams needed it to, with two late scoring drives and a win that pushed Los Angeles to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the NFC. He finished with 316 yards through the air, and for stretches he looked like the veteran quarterback the Rams have leaned on to steady them when games start to tilt.

Still, the numbers only tell part of the story, because Stafford also threw two interceptions that helped keep Philadelphia in the game. The defense did its job by limiting the Eagles offense and giving the Rams a path to victory, but the bigger question for Sean McVays team is whether Staffords late surge was a sign of things to come or just enough to mask a concern that could linger beyond one win. Rams Finally Beat The Eagles But One Big Problem Remains

The Rams finally got the result they had been chasing against the Eagles, and it came in the kind of tight, physical game that has often gone the other way for Los Angeles since the Matthew Stafford era began. A defense that spent most of the afternoon making life miserable for Philadelphia changed the feel of the matchup, holding the Eagles under 200 yards and keeping them off the board on third down all game, while Kyren Williams helped steady the offense enough to keep the Rams in front.

Still, it was not a clean win for Stafford and company, because the veteran quarterback gave Philadelphia extra chances with multiple interceptions that led directly to Eagles points. Byron Young helped close the door with 2.5 sacks, including the final takedown that sealed it, but the big-picture concern for Los Angeles lingers: against a top opponent, the Rams were good enough to win, yet not sharp enough to feel fully comfortable about what comes next. Rams Win In Philly Led To A Heated Scene Fans Will Debate

The Rams left Lincoln Financial Field with a big Week 4 win over the Eagles, but the postgame scene quickly became its own talking point. A video posted by a fan appeared to show Rams coaches engaging with Philadelphia supporters in a way that only added fuel to an already charged atmosphere, with the exchange unfolding after the final whistle and drawing plenty of attention beyond the scoreline.

What followed looked like the kind of tense aftermath that can happen when a road team wins in Philadelphia, especially in a matchup with as much edge as this one. The clip showed fans reacting by throwing drinks, and security eventually stepped in to break things up, leaving a messy finish to a game the Rams will remember for the result as much as the drama around it.
