Tyler Davis did enough on the stat sheet in Week 1 to look productive, but the Rams know better than to stop there. The defensive tackle finished with seven tackles against the 49ers, yet his overall day was rough enough to put him in an uncomfortable spot as Los Angeles heads into Week 2.
His 31.1 PFF grade landed 100th out of 107 interior defenders, and the run defense in particular was a mess. That fit the bigger picture for the Rams’ front, which spent much of the afternoon getting pushed around.
Davis also had the kind of mistake that sticks out fast. On a sack attempt that was already going nowhere, he hit the 49ers quarterback with an egregious roughing-the-passer headbutt. A second-and-three turned into a 15-yard penalty and a first down, and Davis never got his pads lined up correctly for a legal finish.
That sort of lapse matters even more with the Rams trying to clean things up in Week 2. The front has to be sharper, more disciplined, and fully locked in.
And Davis’ margin for error is getting thinner. Aaron Donald is nearing a return, and Ty Hamilton is already pressing for snaps. If that keeps up, Davis could slide down the pecking order before long.
Right now, Donald’s return would naturally push Davis down behind a starting group of Donald, Kobie Turner, and nose tackle Poona Ford. Braden Fiske would also be part of the backup mix, and he would likely pick up more of the defensive end work once Donald is back.
Davis and Ford were on the field together at times against San Francisco, but Davis also served as Ford’s top backup in the middle last season. Hamilton is now making a push for that same role, which means Davis has real competition for the job he opened the year with.
The depth chart had Davis clearly ahead to start the season, but that edge can disappear quickly. The Rams cannot keep handing out opportunities if the play on the field looks like it did last week, and that applies across the defense.
Against the 49ers, Davis played 32 defensive snaps, which was a little above his average from last season. Hamilton got 12 snaps on defense and five more on special teams, so he is already part of the rotation after locking up his roster spot early in the preseason. Fiske, one of the few Rams pass rushers to record multiple pressures in Week 1, is also set to absorb more reps at defensive end when Donald returns.
None of this means the Rams are ready to give up on Davis. Far from it. He was one of their steadiest backups last season, giving them versatile depth behind Ford and earning nearly an upper-quartile PFF grade while standing out against the run.
That is why the expectation is simple: Week 1 needs to be the exception, not the new normal. With Donald on the verge of debuting and Hamilton looking for a Year 2 jump, the snaps are not going to be easy to come by. Davis has to tighten up against the run and clean up the discipline issues, or those chances may go to someone else.
