Sean McVay Wont Love What This Means For The Rams

Sean McVay's disapproval of the NFL's plans for more Australian games highlights a clash with Roger Goodell's global vision for the league.

Sean McVay probably won’t love Roger Goodell’s latest read on the NFL’s trip to Australia.

Before the Los Angeles Rams dropped a 27-7 Week 1 decision to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne this past September, McVay and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear they weren’t exactly fired up about being sent “to go 19 hours away to play a game” that counted in the standings. But the commissioner doesn’t sound like he’s in the mood to reconsider the league’s overseas ambitions.

“We look at the Australia game as a tremendous success on really every level,” Goodell recently said, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk on Thursday.

The two teams handled the travel differently. The 49ers arrived in Australia a week early to get acclimated to the time change, while McVay had the Rams land about 28 hours before kickoff. That timing drew plenty of attention after a story said the Rams “seemed to approach the Australia trip with the excitement of a teenager asked to take out the trash.”

McVay later leaned into the joke and admitted that sometimes “a dumba-- coach...makes travel plans that puts you in bad spots.”

Goodell didn’t directly say he was aiming that remark at McVay, but he made it clear he thinks the league learned plenty from the setup.

“We learn something from every game and every event,” Goodell continued. “It was a longer trip, of course. The teams took different approaches - I think we learned something from that, too.”

He also came away impressed by the turnout and by what he saw from fans in Australia. The game was staged with American television audiences in mind, and Goodell singled out the crowd of 100,000 on a Friday morning.

“To get 100,000 people on a Friday morning at 10:30 is pretty remarkable,” Goodell said. “I think it shows the passion - I think in all of Australia, I’ve never seen a region or country that had more of a passion for sports, and I think that was demonstrated.”

The NFL has long talked about the idea of having every team play at least one game overseas each season, and Goodell’s comments make it sound as if Australia could be in the mix again.

Rams Nearing A Trade Deadline Decision Fans May Not Like

The Rams have reached the kind of midseason crossroads that can change the feel of a year in a hurry. At 2-4, they are still technically in the playoff conversation, but recent losses and the strength of the division have made the path back much tougher than it looked a few weeks ago. That puts general manager Les Snead in a familiar spot, weighing whether to keep pushing for wins now or start thinking more about what comes next.

With the November 10 trade deadline approaching, the decision is no longer abstract. Los Angeles has a history of moving veteran players to add draft capital and restock the roster, and a similar approach would signal a more cautious view of the rest of the season. For fans hoping this group can still make a run, that possibility is not an especially comforting one, but it is very much part of the conversation now. [Read more 🡒]

Rams Finally Have A Myles Garrett Injury Breakthrough

Myles Garretts long wait to get back on the field appears to be nearing its end, and that gives the Rams a notable boost heading into the middle of the season. According to Ian Rapoport on The Pat McAfee Show, Garrett is likely to return to practice after Week 7, with a possible game debut for Los Angeles coming as soon as Week 8. He has been sidelined since before Week 1, so this would mark a meaningful step forward after an extended absence.

Even so, the Rams do not sound locked into the earliest possible timeline. Garrett will miss the Week 7 matchup with the Raiders, and there is still a chance the team opts for a more cautious approach and holds him out until Week 9. For a Rams team trying to manage the long season ahead, the decision may come down to how ready Garrett looks once he gets back on the practice field. [Read more 🡒]

Rams Head Into Raiders Matchup With Too Many Injury Questions

The Rams are heading into their matchup with the Raiders with the kind of injury uncertainty that can complicate a game plan fast. Cornerback Trent McDuffie is out with a groin injury, linebacker Nate Landman is missing practice because of a concussion, and wide receiver Puka Nacua was limited, leaving the team to navigate a week in which both sides of the ball are being tested before kickoff.

Los Angeles is not the only team dealing with questions, either, with Las Vegas also managing its own injury list as wide receiver Mike Washington Jr. and linebacker Quay Walker were limited or did not practice. For the Rams, the issue is less about one headline absence than the accumulation of concerns, the sort that can alter rotations, force late adjustments and make a divisional-type Sunday feel even more precarious.
