Sean McVay is trying to put out a small fire before it turns into something bigger.
With the Rams sitting at 2-4 after their Week 6 loss to Arizona, the mood around the team already feels fragile. That’s the backdrop for McVay addressing Kyren Williams’ postgame comments, which landed with more bite than the running back likely intended in the moment.
McVay said Monday that he talked with Williams about what he said after the loss. He made clear that Williams came to him first, and that the comment came from frustration after the game.
“I have,” McVay told reporters on Monday, per Mike Florio of PFT. “He brought it up to me.
I wasn’t aware of it. He’s such an energy for us.
He was emotional after the game. I know this guy’s heart.
He wants to make sure that he’s influencing and effecting positive change. I think what he said it was more of, ‘I just always want to try to be that spark.’”
The remark that set this off came when Williams was asked why the Rams couldn’t keep momentum going from one drive to the next. His response was pointed: “Can't tell you, bro.
Probably because I'm not out there.” It read like a direct jab at the coaching staff, even if McVay doesn’t see it that way.
According to McVay, the issue was less about intent and more about emotion spilling over right after the game.
“He was frustrated after the game, but his teammates know what he’s about. When he explained it to me, I totally understood where he was coming from,” McVay added.
“He’s a great leader for us. I think the way that it was interpreted was not what his intentions were.
I know his teammates and I felt that way. He actually brought that up to me on his own.
I was not aware of it until he brought it up to me.”
The Rams still have bigger problems than one tense quote. They need more production on offense if they’re going to steady this season, and that task just got tougher with Davante Adams out for several weeks.

Matthew Stafford Off-Field Admission Adds New Twist To Rams Struggles
Matthew Stafford and the Rams have been trying to find steadier footing early in the 2026 season, and a recent loss to the Arizona Cardinals only added to the questions around a team that has looked uneven. Off the field, Kelly Stafford offered a personal glimpse into the familys routine when she shared on Instagram that she has been dealing with insomnia, a reminder that the quarterbacks life away from the facility can be just as demanding as what happens on Sundays.
Kelly Stafford also spoke in a 2025 Forbes interview about how sleep quality has affected their marriage, which gives this latest admission a little more weight than a passing update. Whether or not it has anything to do with Staffords play is impossible to say, but it does add a human layer to a Rams start that already has plenty of people looking for reasons behind the inconsistency. Matthew Staffords uneven stretch comes at an awkward time for the Rams, who are trying to steady themselves after a frustrating 18-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The veteran quarterback has been up and down in recent games, and any inconsistency around him tends to magnify quickly in Los Angeles, where expectations are always tied to how well Stafford is driving the offense.
Adding another layer, Kelly Stafford recently shared on Instagram that she has been dealing with insomnia, and she has spoken before about how sleep quality affects their marriage in a 2025 Forbes interview. Dan Orlovsky Just Hit A Nerve With Frustrated Rams Fans
Dan Orlovskys criticism of Sean McVay and the Rams landed at a sensitive moment, because the frustration around this team is already easy to hear after an 18-16 loss to the Cardinals. The former quarterback pointed to the way Los Angeles used Kyren Williams and also raised concerns about Matthew Staffords field vision, adding another layer to a defeat that already felt costly for a club trying to steady itself.
Stafford still put together a solid line, going 25 of 33 for 222 yards and two touchdowns, while Williams finished with 10 carries for 50 yards and three catches for 17 yards. The debate now turns to whether the Rams can answer those concerns quickly, with the next chance coming against the Raiders on Oct. 25. [Read more 🡒]
