The Seattle Seahawks are making moves as the regular season winds down, waiving running back Cam Akers and cornerback Shaquill Griffin, according to the NFL’s official transaction wire. Both veterans have battled through challenging seasons, and this latest development could mark another turning point in their winding NFL journeys.
Let’s start with Akers, a once-promising back whose career has been repeatedly disrupted by injuries. Drafted in the second round by the Rams in 2020 out of Florida State, Akers came into the league with high expectations-and for a time, he delivered. But two Achilles tears later, he’s now looking for yet another fresh start.
Akers' path this year has been nothing short of a whirlwind. After his second stint with the Vikings, where he logged just five carries for 19 yards in three games, he bounced around between multiple teams.
He had brief stops with the Texans and Saints before Minnesota brought him back. Most recently, Seattle added him to their roster in late November, but that stint has now come to an end.
It’s clear the talent is there-Akers has shown flashes of explosiveness when healthy-but the repeated injuries and constant movement have made it tough for him to find rhythm or a long-term home. At 26, he’s still young enough to make a comeback, but the road ahead won’t be easy.
As for Shaquill Griffin, his release brings a bit of a full-circle moment. Originally drafted by Seattle in the third round back in 2017, Griffin spent four solid seasons with the Seahawks, becoming a key part of their secondary. His play earned him a big payday in Jacksonville-a three-year deal worth up to $44.5 million, with $29 million guaranteed.
But after being released by the Jaguars last year, Griffin’s career has mirrored that of a journeyman. He had short stays with the Texans and Panthers before signing a one-year deal with the Vikings this past offseason.
When that didn’t stick, Seattle brought him back into the fold in July. Though he didn’t make the final 53-man roster, the Seahawks added him to the practice squad and eventually elevated him to the active roster in late November.
Griffin appeared in two games this season for Seattle and recorded seven total tackles. While the numbers don’t jump off the page, his experience and leadership are qualities that teams often value down the stretch, especially when depth in the secondary becomes a concern.
For both Akers and Griffin, this latest roster move adds another chapter to what have already been eventful NFL careers. Whether they find new homes in the coming weeks or wait until the offseason, their stories aren’t over yet. But for now, the Seahawks are turning the page.
