Seahawks GM John Schneider Wins Costly Receiver Race As Rival Praises Move

Seahawks GM John Schneider's strategic timing pays off with a record-breaking deal for Jaxon Smith-Njigba, outmaneuvering rivals in the high-stakes receiver market.

Seattle Seahawks' general manager, John Schneider, has pulled off a masterstroke by securing star receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba with a lucrative four-year, $168.6 million deal, which includes a whopping $120 million guaranteed. This makes Smith-Njigba the highest-paid receiver in the NFL, a strategic move that puts the Seahawks ahead of the game, especially with the Los Angeles Rams’ Puka Nacua eyeing a megadeal of his own.

An NFL executive highlighted the significance of this timing, noting that it’s a win-win for both Smith-Njigba and the Seahawks. "John wanted to get ahead of the Rams on this," the executive pointed out, emphasizing that while Nacua might eventually command more, Seattle's proactive approach is commendable.

Smith-Njigba's performance last season was nothing short of spectacular. He clinched the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award after leading the league with 1,793 receiving yards. Both he and Nacua notched 10 receiving touchdowns, but Nacua edged out with a league-leading 129 receptions.

As for Nacua, the Rams seem to be playing the waiting game. There’s talk that they might hold off on an extension until later in the summer, possibly waiting to see if George Pickens from the Dallas Cowboys sets a new market standard before the July 15 deadline for multiyear contracts.

Nacua’s versatility on the field, playing multiple receiver and tight end roles, adds to his value. His physical presence and contribution to the run game are pivotal in Sean McVay’s offense, making him a key asset for the Rams. While the Rams are known for rewarding their stars, this contract race adds another layer to the rivalry between these teams.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks can rest easy, knowing Smith-Njigba is locked in and ready to hit the field without contract distractions. This move not only strengthens their roster but also sets the stage for an exciting season ahead.
