Ravens Interview Rams Coach as Head Coaching Search Heats Up

The Ravens added another name to their expanding head coaching search, interviewing Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula-grandson of Hall of Famer Don Shula.

The Ravens’ search for their next head coach continues to ramp up, and over the weekend, they added another intriguing name to their growing list of candidates: Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula.

Shula, 39, comes from football royalty - the son of Dave Shula and grandson of Hall of Fame legend Don Shula - but he’s carved out his own path in the NFL coaching ranks. After breaking in with the Chargers in 2015 as a defensive quality control coach, he’s spent nearly a decade climbing the ladder in Los Angeles. He’s coached linebackers, defensive backs, and most recently, pass rushers, before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 2024.

Under his leadership, the Rams defense finished the 2025 season ranked 10th in points allowed and 17th in total defense. They were solid against the run (12th) and had some room to grow against the pass (19th), but overall, it was a unit that played with discipline and toughness - hallmarks of Shula’s coaching style.

Shula now joins a long and diverse list of candidates the Ravens have interviewed or plan to meet with, as the organization casts a wide net in its search for the next leader of the franchise. Here’s where things stand:

Already Interviewed:

  • Matt Nagy, Chiefs OC - A former head coach with playoff experience and a key piece in Kansas City’s offensive machine.
  • Klint Kubiak, Seahawks OC - Part of a coaching family with deep NFL roots, known for his work in quarterback development.
  • Kevin Stefanski, former Browns OC - A familiar face in the AFC North, bringing head coaching experience and a reputation for offensive structure.
  • Davis Webb, Broncos QB coach - A young, up-and-coming mind who’s quickly gaining traction in coaching circles.
  • Vance Joseph, Broncos DC - A veteran defensive coach with head coaching experience and a strong presence on the sideline.
  • Anthony Weaver, Dolphins DC - A former Raven himself, Weaver brings energy and a commanding defensive acumen.
  • Kliff Kingsbury, former Commanders OC - Known for his offensive creativity, especially in the passing game.
  • Brian Flores, Vikings DC - A no-nonsense leader with a defensive pedigree and head coaching experience in Miami.
  • Jim Schwartz, Browns DC - One of the most respected defensive minds in the game, with a Super Bowl ring and a long track record of success.
  • Jesse Minter, Chargers DC - A rising star with ties to the Ravens’ past, having previously served on John Harbaugh’s staff.
  • Chris Shula, Rams DC - The latest to interview, bringing a strong defensive résumé and a deep football lineage.

Scheduled Interviews:

  • Robert Saleh, 49ers DC - Known for his fiery leadership and ability to build elite defenses.
  • Mike McDaniel, former Dolphins HC - An offensive innovator with a unique approach to game planning and culture-building.
  • Nate Scheelhaase, Rams pass game coordinator - A young coach with potential, getting a look for his offensive mind.

Interview Requested:

  • Joe Brady, Bills OC - Once considered a wunderkind, Brady has rebuilt his stock with a strong showing in Buffalo.

The Ravens are clearly doing their homework. From seasoned veterans to rising stars, offensive minds to defensive tacticians, they’re exploring every angle. Shula’s inclusion in this mix speaks to his growing reputation around the league - not just as a name with legacy ties, but as a coach who’s earned his shot through hard work and consistent results.

As the Ravens continue to evaluate their options, don’t be surprised if this process stretches out a bit longer. This is a pivotal hire for a franchise that’s built on stability and long-term vision. With a roster full of talent and expectations sky-high, Baltimore is making sure they get this one right.
