Brandon Aiyuk’s path back to the NFL is opening up, and the next stop may not be San Francisco.
The wide receiver has officially filed the paperwork to come off the Reserve/Left Squad list, which puts the decision squarely back on the 49ers. Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million extension in 2024, but the relationship between player and team unraveled after a torn ACL and a contract dispute that turned ugly. San Francisco also wiped out $27 million of his guaranteed money after he missed required team milestones.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday that Aiyuk is ready to play, and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, reinforced that message. “Brandon is healthy and ready to get back on the field,” Rosenhaus told Schefter.
Now the 49ers have to choose whether to keep him, trade him or release him once he returns to the facility. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has not shown much interest in bringing him back into the lineup, which leaves the door open for another team to jump in.
Three teams stand out.
The Kansas City Chiefs make immediate sense. They need help at wide receiver, and Aiyuk would give Patrick Mahomes another proven target. If he’s fully healthy, he could bring a real boost to the offense, though Kansas City would still have to decide whether the contract situation is worth the trouble.
The Los Angeles Rams are also in the mix. They could use another outside threat while Davante Adams works his way back from injury, and Aiyuk would add another layer to the passing game. The question there is whether the off-field drama fits what they want in the locker room.
Then there’s Washington, which may have the cleanest fit of all. Aiyuk and quarterback Jayden Daniels played college ball together and remain close friends, making the Commanders a natural landing spot. Schefter also tied Washington to Aiyuk during the 2026 offseason, and he again pointed to them as a possible destination.
“I think they will be holding onto him to see if there’s any trade value at all. Washington does make a lot of sense,” Schefter said.
“He played with Jayden Daniels in college. They’re very close.
I’m sure Jayden would love to play again with Brandon Aiyuk.”
For now, the 49ers still control the next move. But if they decide to move on, Aiyuk could find a fresh start somewhere else very quickly.

Rams Are Finally Getting Their Biggest Defensive Difference-Maker Back
After spending the early part of the season managing their defensive pressure without him, the Rams are finally on the verge of getting Myles Garrett back on the practice field. Garrett, acquired in the offseason, had been on injured reserve because of knee swelling, and his return is a welcome sign for a defense that has had to keep finding ways to generate heat on opposing quarterbacks without its biggest difference-maker.
Sean McVay has stressed a cautious approach as Garrett works back in, which makes sense for a player the Rams expect to lean on heavily once he is ready. Even so, the move to bring him back into practice is a meaningful step, and it should give Los Angeles a much-needed boost to a pass rush that has been asked to carry a bigger load in his absence. Les Snead Faces A Familiar Rams Deadline Dilemma Again
The trade deadline is creeping closer, and Les Snead is once again in the familiar spot of weighing whether the Rams should make a move or simply stand pat. Los Angeles has long treated this part of the calendar as a chance to improve, but Snead has also shown he is not interested in dealing just to create the appearance of activity, especially when the roster already has to account for injuries and the way the team is currently built.
With the deadline set for November 10, the Rams are in the kind of holding pattern that can make this stretch tricky for a front office. Snead has a history of waiting until late to act, but there is no sign of a confirmed trade or a clear plan yet, which leaves the team balancing urgency against patience as the market develops. Rams Punt Return Decision Could Reveal What They Really Trust
The Rams latest roster shuffle says plenty about how theyre thinking about the punt return job. Alex Bachman, who had been handling the role, was moved to the practice squad to create room for cornerback Cam Lampkin on the active roster, leaving Los Angeles with a decision to make on one of those small but revealing special teams spots. With the season moving forward, the return game is suddenly one of the more interesting depth-chart questions on the team.
Brennan Presley is sitting on the practice squad, Tutu Atwell remains an option with receiver upside, and the Rams could still look outside the building if they want someone who can do more than just field kicks. However they sort it out, the choice will say a lot about what they value most in that role: reliability, explosiveness, or the ability to double as a part-time offensive piece. [Read more 🡒]
