The Los Angeles Rams’ season opener turned ugly in the third quarter when tight end Davis Allen was forced out after a hard shot against the San Francisco 49ers.
Allen was being checked for a concussion after absorbing the hit with 8:52 left in the third quarter. At that point, Los Angeles was down 17-7, and Allen had just picked up a first down on a rush before taking the blow.
The sequence looked alarming right away. Allen dropped to the turf, appeared to briefly go into the fencing response position, then stumbled as he tried to stand. He was taken to the blue medical tent before being carted to the locker room.
He was listed as questionable to return.
If Allen can’t come back, the Rams lose a key piece of their tight end group. The 25-year-old was coming off the best statistical season of his career after appearing in all 17 games for Los Angeles in 2025, when he caught 24 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns. He also remained part of the team’s blocking mix alongside veteran Tyler Higbee.
Los Angeles may need Higbee and the rest of its tight ends to carry more of the load if Allen is out beyond Thursday.
Allen’s injury added to a rough stretch for both teams at the position. Earlier in the game, 49ers rookie wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling was ruled out with an ankle injury, and tight end Jake Tonges also left with a knee injury.
For now, there’s no confirmed diagnosis beyond the concussion evaluation, but the Rams will be hoping the injury doesn’t prove as serious as it looked.
Los Angeles opened the season with a 27-7 loss to their AFC West rivals and will try to bounce back at home against the New York Giants on Sept. 21.
