That’s the brutal math of late August. A team trims from 90 players to 53, and for everyone who gets through, someone else is left waiting on the other side. For fans, it can be a frustrating stretch, especially when a player they liked in camp doesn’t survive the cut.
The Rams’ first round of moves included a few surprises, and the decisions only became tougher from there. Cornerback Cam Lampkin was one of the names many believed had earned a spot.
Instead, Los Angeles took a chance that he would clear waivers and make it back to the practice squad. That bet paid off, and Lampkin is back.
That kind of move is part of what makes cutdown day so unpredictable. Coaches and fans do not always see the same thing, and roster decisions often come down to more than one strong preseason showing.
Still, there is a path forward for plenty of the players who were released. Many of the Rams who missed the initial 53-man roster put good work on film during the preseason, and nearly half of the players let go returned to the practice squad.
That tape can matter beyond Los Angeles, too. As Week 1 rosters settle in around the league, some of those players could draw interest elsewhere. Others may end up back on the radar later in the season if injuries open up a spot.
Everett’s perspective lands because he knows what it feels like from the player’s side. Cutdown day is not just paperwork and roster math.
It’s a day that brings setbacks, uncertainty, and for some players, the end of the road. Of the 90 men who enter camp and preseason, only a little more than half make it through.
The Rams also had a few familiar names experience different outcomes in 2026. Running back Jarquez Hunter was traded instead of being lost on waivers after his expected release, and then the Miami Dolphins waived him. Defensive lineman Larrell Murchison went from the 53-man roster to the practice squad.
That is the hard edge of the preseason every year: players, families, and friends all feel the sting when the news comes down. Some will find another opportunity. Some won’t.
