The Giants’ reunion with Odell Beckham Jr. is already over.
New York has released Beckham, according to Jordan Schultz, ending a comeback that never got off the ground. Schultz wrote, “Sources: The Giants are releasing WR Odell Beckham Jr. OBJ has not been featured much despite earning a spot on the team, and the sides decided a mutual parting was best for everyone,”
Beckham had returned to New York in the offseason with hopes of finishing his career where it began, and the early signs gave fans something to dream on. He drew attention after a strong showing at the Fanatics Flag Football Classic, then turned heads again with a spectacular one-handed catch during warmups before a Sunday night game against Dallas.
The grab brought back memories of his famous 2014 catch in that same stadium. It also wound up being the peak of the reunion.
On the field, the production never came. Beckham played only 19 total snaps over three games and did not record a catch. By Week 2, he had logged just four offensive snaps and no targets, drawing criticism and plenty of mockery from fans for his sideline role.
The Giants also had a practical reason to make the move now. They needed a roster spot for punt returner Braxton Berrios, who had used up his practice squad elevations. That forced the team to choose between keeping Beckham active or opening space for a player they needed on special teams.
New York also kept leaning on younger options such as Malik Nabers instead of Beckham, and that trend never changed.
Schultz said the release gives Beckham “an opportunity to catch on with a team in a better situation.”
Beckham now enters free agency with an 11-year career that still carries real name value. He has 575 catches, 7,987 yards and 59 touchdowns in 122 career games. His numbers have dipped since helping the Rams reach the Super Bowl after the 2021 season, but teams around the league still know he can flash.
A return to Los Angeles makes sense as one possible landing spot. Puka Nacua is dealing with hip and groin injuries, and the Rams also do not have proven depth behind him and Davante Adams.
Former teammate Jarvis Landry said he believes Beckham would welcome that reunion, and told Kay Adams that playing with a healthy Aaron Donald again would make it even better. Beckham has also said Sean McVay brought out the best in him during that Super Bowl run.
Whether that leads to another contract is still unclear, but Beckham should have options. Receiver depth is thin across the league, and his phone figures to start ringing soon.
