Rams Return Job Suddenly Looks Like A Real Problem Again

With Alex Bachman's struggles in the return game, the Rams are eyeing three under-the-radar roster members to bolster their special teams.

The Los Angeles Rams have already made one change at returner, and they may not be done.

Xavier Smith was pushed out of the punt return job after just three games, and he’s now with the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad. That left LA to turn to recently signed receiver Alex Bachman, but his first outing didn’t exactly settle anything.

Against Philadelphia, Bachman handled four punts for 30 yards and four kickoffs for 89 yards. He also let a catchable punt touch the ground and bounce into the Eagles’ favor, which put the Rams in a bad spot deep in their own territory. One game is a small sample, sure, but it was enough to raise the question: if Bachman doesn’t stick, who does?

The Rams had originally hoped third-year wideout Jordan Whittington would take care of kickoff duties, which would have let Smith focus only on punts. But Whittington’s quad injury earlier this season wrecked that plan and forced Smith into double duty before he was eventually moved on. Now LA is back in the search business, and the answers might already be in the building.

One option is running back Dean Connors. The undrafted rookie has the kind of traits teams want in this role: speed, strength and agility.

He’s already handled one kickoff for 23 yards, and he flashed as a versatile weapon in the preseason. At 5-foot-11 and 206 pounds, he also looks sturdy enough to absorb the punishment that comes with return work.

The only catch is that he hasn’t gotten on the field on offense since the regular season began.

Another possibility is Tutu Atwell. The veteran receiver is back in Los Angeles, but his story is familiar by now: plenty of speed, limited usage on offense.

At 5-foot-9 and 165 pounds, he’s not built for the blocking responsibilities LA asks of its receivers. That’s exactly why return duties make sense for him.

His speed makes him hard to ignore, and his size makes it tough for him to carve out a steady offensive role. Returning punts and kickoffs could be the cleanest way to get value from him.

Then there’s a more unconventional name: tight end Max Klare. The Rams drafted him knowing he had a reputation for catching just about everything thrown his way, and that kind of reliability would obviously help in the return game.

He’s a different sort of option, but his athleticism and power make him at least worth considering. Plus, after four games without a single target on offense, he needs a way to contribute.

Special teams has suddenly become a spot the Rams may have to solve quickly. The defense is delivering.

Matthew Stafford showed again that fourth-quarter comebacks are still part of his story. So if Bachman has another rough day against the Buffalo Bills this week, LA may need an answer fast.

Connors and Atwell look like the most natural fits. Klare is the wild card. Either way, the Rams have options if they decide Bachman isn’t the long-term fix.

Aaron Donald's Rams Return Comes With One Big Bills Concern

Aaron Donald was back on the practice field Friday, a strong sign the Rams are preparing to have their centerpiece defensive tackle available for Monday Night Football against the Bills. Donald missed Week 4 with a back injury, but his full participation suggested the team is moving toward getting him back into the lineup after a cautious week of ramp-up work.

Sean McVay said Donald and other Rams were being built up gradually in practice with Monday in mind, a reminder that simply getting him back is only part of the equation. Los Angeles also plans to manage his workload carefully, balancing the need for Donalds impact against the realities of his injury and age as the Rams get ready for one of their tougher early-season tests. Rams Get A New Opening As Bills Enter Monday Shorthanded

Buffalos injury report has created a little more uncertainty around a Rams matchup that already carried some weight after the Bills loss to New England. Head coach Joe Brady confirmed that wide receiver Joshua Palmer and defensive lineman Ed Oliver will miss the game, trimming two important pieces from a roster trying to steady itself early in the week.

The Bills still have some moving parts beyond those absences, with DJ Moore and Dee Alford listed as questionable while Christian Benford is set to play. For the Rams, it adds another layer to a Week 5 trip that now comes against a Buffalo team trying to regroup while managing a shorter deck than it expected. [Read more 🡒]

Rams Get Timely Reinforcements For A Huge Test Against Buffalo

The Rams should head into their Week 5 matchup with Buffalo in far better shape than they were earlier in the week, with multiple starters expected to be available for one of the most important tests on their schedule. Colby Parkinson, Jaylen Watson and Aaron Donald are all in line to suit up, giving Los Angeles a welcome boost on both sides of the ball as it prepares to measure itself against a Bills team built to punish any roster that is short-handed.

Quentin Lake remains the main question mark for the Rams after being listed questionable with a hip injury, though his move to limited practice on Saturday offered at least some encouragement. Buffalo, meanwhile, has its own availability issues heading into the game, with Ed Oliver and Joshua Palmer ruled out and DJ Moore listed questionable, setting up a meeting where health and depth could matter just as much as the game plan.
