George Kittle is on the plane to Australia, and that’s a strong sign the 49ers expect their star tight end to be in the lineup when they open the season against the Rams.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Kittle is traveling with San Francisco and trending toward playing in the Sept. 10 matchup. The 32-year-old has also reportedly logged two straight positive days of practice, which fits the ramp-up plan the 49ers have put him on this week.
Kittle first returned to the field on Aug. 23, his first practice action since tearing his Achilles in the 49ers’ wild-card win over the Philadelphia Eagles in January. Since then, the team has been building his workload with the opener in mind. He had already made it clear he’d rather not make the trip to Australia if he wasn’t going to suit up, according to The Athletic’s Vic Tafur and Matt Barrows.
When he was healthy enough to play last season, Kittle was still a major piece of San Francisco’s offense. He appeared in 11 games and finished with 57 catches for 628 yards and seven touchdowns. His 57.1 receiving yards per game ranked second among tight ends who played at least nine games, according to TruMedia.
Nick Bosa will also be on the trip. The star edge rusher has been out for most of training camp with a knee injury, but head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Bosa is expected to practice this week for the first time since Aug. 3.
Bosa’s recent injury history has been well documented. He played only three games last season after suffering a torn ACL in September, but his production when healthy remains elite. Since 2021, his 17.2% pressure rate ranks third among 148 qualifying pass-rushers.
The game itself will make history. The Sept. 10 meeting between the 49ers and Rams will be the NFL’s first game ever played in Australia. San Francisco is set to leave for Melbourne on Wednesday evening, while Los Angeles is not scheduled to arrive until the day before kickoff.
