The Rams don’t need a miracle in Week 2. They need their offensive line to look like the unit Pro Football Focus still believes it can be.
That’s the encouraging part after a Week 1 loss in which Los Angeles scored only seven points. Even with that ugly result, PFF still has the Rams’ offensive line inside the NFL’s top ten. And if that ranking holds water, the foundation is already there for a quick correction.
The clearest evidence came on the ground. Los Angeles averaged 4.52 yards per carry, and that wasn’t an accident.
The line did real work in run blocking, with left guard Steve Avila and center Coleman Shelton helping set the tone. It may not have looked dominant across the board, but the group was better than the final impression suggested.
The problem showed up when the Rams dropped back to pass. Protection broke down, and that has to get cleaned up fast if Matthew Stafford is going to get back on track after a shaky start. Week 2 leaves no room for more of the same.
The challenge gets harder with the Giants coming to town. New York has a defense built around Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and rookie Arvell Reese, and it already flashed plenty of bite in Week 1.
Against Dallas, the Giants allowed just 69 rushing yards, gave up only 244 total yards, and held the Cowboys to 20 points. For comparison, the Rams surrendered 379 yards and 27 points.
One game doesn’t define a season, but the message is pretty clear: the Giants aren’t going to make life easy. That means the Rams’ offensive line has to be sharper, cleaner, and tougher in every phase.
There is still reason to believe Los Angeles can respond. After a humiliating defeat, the focus should be there. And if jet lag played any role in the Week 1 dud, getting in and out quickly should help the Rams avoid a repeat against New York.
