The Los Angeles Rams have found themselves at a crossroads in their quest for quarterback depth. With veteran Matthew Stafford still commanding the field, the Rams had hoped to lure Kirk Cousins to sunny LA. However, Cousins has opted for a different path, signing with the Las Vegas Raiders to vie for a starting position.
This move isn’t entirely shocking. Many quarterbacks crave the opportunity to lead a team, and Cousins is no exception. Despite the Rams’ efforts, their pitch fell short for Cousins and his camp.
The connection between Cousins and his former offensive coordinator, Sean McVay, seemed like a natural fit. Yet, as we've seen before, such reunions aren't always a guaranteed success. Just look at McVay's brief stint with DeSean Jackson.
So, where do the Rams go from here?
With Cousins off the table, the Rams' strategy becomes clear. First up, expect GM Les Snead to expedite talks to bring back Jimmy Garoppolo as a reliable backup. But that’s just the beginning.
The Rams are likely eyeing the draft for fresh quarterback talent. Their pursuit of Cousins indicates a strong desire to bolster the position. Re-signing Garoppolo would be step one of a two-part plan.
While a first-round pick might not be used on a quarterback, the Rams clearly need a young, high-potential player to develop. With Stafford and Stetson Bennett under contract through 2026, there's a looming gap in the roster that a multi-year deal with Garoppolo alone can't fill.
Though Cousins won’t be wearing the Rams' horns, the path forward for LA's quarterback succession is now unmistakably clear.
