Rams May Regret Letting This Former Lineman Get Away

Undrafted and undersized, Willie Lampkin has the Eagles rethinking what it means to make a big impact on the offensive line.

Willie Lampkin is making teams notice him again, and the Eagles are getting the benefit this time.

A year ago, Lampkin was one of the preseason standouts around the league while with the Rams, a rookie center who kept putting defensive linemen on their backs. That run got cut short when he was injured before he could lock down a roster spot, and Los Angeles waived him with an injury designation in hopes he would clear and return.

Philadelphia stepped in and claimed the undrafted rookie anyway, betting on the talent even while he was hurt. Lampkin spent last season rehabbing and developing with the Eagles, and now he’s back in the spotlight during another preseason push.

His latest eye-opening moment came in the Eagles’ preseason opener against the Ravens. On a third-and-15 pass, Lampkin stayed locked on Ravens defensive tackle Broderick Washington, keeping him well away from Eagles quarterback Andy Dalton. Most linemen stop once the ball is out, but Lampkin kept driving, steering Washington down the field and eventually dumping him to the turf.

That kind of finish fits the way Lampkin has played since college. He was a starting guard for five years, earned first-team All-American honors at North Carolina, and won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the ACC’s best offensive lineman.

On paper, that should have made him a draft name. Instead, his Pro Day measurements at North Carolina told a different story: just under 5-foot-11 and 279 pounds.

NFL teams passed, and he went undrafted.

The size questions haven’t slowed him down on the field. He keeps winning against bigger defensive linemen, and Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said last week that Lampkin keeps popping whenever the staff studies the tape.

“You’ve seen Willie continue to get better, and you notice him even more once the pads come on,” Sirianni said. “He has the ability to play center or guard, good versatility, smart guy, really athletic.

He’s been fun to watch at camp. We find ourselves as coaches when we’re watching tape, just kind of being like, ‘Man, Willie did it again.’

And Willie’s getting some really good guys to go up against. So that’s tested every day, and we’re just looking for him to continue to grow and continue to show what he can do because it’s about consistency.

We all want consistency, to have that steady growth of getting better, but you’re building trust, and I think Willie is building trust with his teammates because you build trust by consistently doing what you’re supposed to do out there, and Willie’s been doing that. I know not only the coaches, but we’re all impressed by Willie.”

Lampkin’s frame stands out even more on television, where his size was noted during the Eagles-Ravens broadcast. But his play keeps forcing the conversation back to what happens after the snap. At some point, production has to outweigh the measurements, and Lampkin is making a strong case that he belongs in the NFL.

Aaron Donald Just Put Rams Week 1 Plans In Doubt

Aaron Donalds return remains in limbo as the Rams move closer to a Week 1 trip to Australia, with the star defensive tackle still going through his process on a possible comeback. Sean McVay said Donald has continued to work through the situation, and the veteran has already completed two workouts with the team in August, keeping open the possibility that he could still rejoin the roster.

Even so, the uncertainty is hard to ignore this late in the calendar. NFL insider Mike Florio suggested Donald may not be there when the Rams open the season overseas, and with no final decision made, the team is left waiting on one of the biggest questions on its early schedule. [Read more 🡒]

Sean McVay Sent Rams Fans A Clear Message About Ty Simpson

Ty Simpsons first preseason outing with the Rams gave the team exactly the kind of glimpse coaches want in August: calm execution, efficient throws and a quarterback who looked comfortable working within the offense. Against mostly lower-tier defenders, Simpson handled the moment well enough to turn heads, completing 21 of 25 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns while showing the sort of poise that can make a backup quarterback conversation worth following.

Sean McVay made clear after the game that the performance was about more than just a clean stat line, pointing to Simpsons decision-making, timing, accuracy and footwork as reasons for the encouraging showing. Even with that praise, the Rams know one preseason game does not settle anything, and the real question now is whether Simpson can keep stacking those traits when the competition gets faster and the looks get tougher. Rams Bubble Standouts Just Made Final Roster Cuts More Complicated

The Rams preseason win over the Chiefs gave a few fringe players a chance to turn heads at exactly the right time, and several of them did just that. Running back Dean Connors, tight end Mark Redman, receiver Brennan Presley and safety Nick Andersen all flashed in ways that are hard to ignore once roster decisions get serious, which is exactly what makes this stage of camp so tricky for coaches trying to sort out the back end of the roster.

Connors in particular added some urgency to the conversation with a performance that stood out among the group, while Redman, Presley and Andersen also put together outings that could keep them in the mix for a practice-squad role or draw attention elsewhere. The problem for all of them is the same: strong August tape does not always overcome crowded depth charts, and the Rams now have a more complicated final cutdown than they probably expected.
