The Rams didn’t bring in a blockbuster undrafted class, but one name keeps rising above the rest: Nikhai Hill-Green.
Los Angeles added five draft picks and then filled out the roster with a wave of undrafted free agents, and most of those players are long shots to survive final cuts. Hill-Green is different. If an undrafted rookie is going to break through and make the 53-man roster, he looks like the best candidate on this team.
The reason starts with opportunity. Linebacker is still a soft spot for the Rams.
Nate Landman gives them a solid to above-average starter, but Omar Speights is going to have to hold off challengers to keep his job next to him. Hill-Green has the kind of profile that can make that a real fight.
Coverage is the separator. Speights has his issues there, and Hill-Green brings the skill set to attack that weakness. After a college path that took him from Michigan to Charlotte to Colorado and finally Alabama, he arrives in camp with a chance to make some noise.
His road through college was anything but smooth. He bounced back from injury and a demotion at Michigan, earned a starting job at Charlotte and then Colorado, and eventually worked his way back into a premium Power program with the Crimson Tide. Last season, he finished second in college football with a 55 percent completion rate allowed.
There are other undrafted names in the mix, with cornerback Al'Zillion Hamilton among them. But Hill-Green’s position and specific value give him the edge in this race.
The Rams should welcome the competition at off-ball linebacker. Even if Speights keeps his starting role, they need more bodies and more options in the rotation. Hill-Green and special-teams piece Shaun Dolac look like the main contenders to climb the depth chart.
And there’s a path here that goes beyond just making the team. Hill-Green has a legitimate shot to win a starting job, whether that happens by Week 1 or later in the season.
Speights, also an undrafted rookie in 2024, played in all 17 games and started 10. Hill-Green now has the same kind of opening.
Physically, he fits right in the middle of the room. He measured 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds, sitting between Speights, who is an inch shorter and 234 pounds, and Landman, who is 6-foot-3 and also 234 pounds. That build suits a linebacker who can help in coverage while Landman handles more of the run work.
His final college numbers won’t jump off the page: 60 tackles, five tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and three passes defensed. But he finished strong when it mattered most. Over a three-game stretch that included the Conference Championship against Georgia and Alabama’s playoff run to the Quarterfinals, Hill-Green posted 16 tackles, two TFLs and 2 PDs.
