Rams Just Sent Another Message About Their Return Game Problem

The Los Angeles Rams continue their revamp of the special teams unit by releasing Alex Bachman, signaling strategic changes to boost performance amid ongoing challenges.

The Rams are still searching for answers on special teams, and Tuesday brought another roster shakeup in that effort.

Los Angeles released wide receiver and kickoff/punt returner Alex Bachman as the team heads into Week 9, continuing a stretch of changes aimed at fixing a unit that has not met expectations. Bachman had taken over after the Rams moved on from Xavier Smith in the same role earlier this season, but his production never gave the team much of a lift.

Bachman handled punts cleanly, but the return game never really came alive. He averaged 5.2 yards per punt return, which ranked 31st among players with at least five punt returns this season. On kickoffs, he averaged 22.9 yards per return, putting him 62nd out of 75 qualifying returners.

The Rams have been trying to push the standard higher than simply securing the ball and ending the play. That urgency showed up again Sunday against the Chargers, when Los Angeles lost 3.6 in special teams EPA despite not allowing a long return. Bachman also finished a punt return for zero yards on a play where there appeared to be room to get upfield.

The team’s options at returner are now less clear. Jordan Whittington was the only other listed kick returner behind Bachman, and running back Dean Connors was just placed on injured reserve.

At punt returner, Konata Mumpfield was listed as the backup to Bachman. Even so, it would not be a surprise if the Rams added another returner this week.

That search has already led to other moves. Last week, the Rams signed Joshua Karty to help on kickoffs and added Jon Rhattigan, a special teams player, as part of the ongoing overhaul. Even with those additions, the Rams still lost 3.6 in special teams EPA last week without giving up a long return or missing any field goals.

Bachman’s release came with a few more roster adjustments. The Rams signed cornerback Cam Lampkin from the practice squad to the active roster.

After releasing Nyzier Fourqurean last week, they brought him back to the practice squad. The team also released linebacker Garrett Nelson from the practice squad.

Head coach Sean McVay has made it clear the Rams are not satisfied with where things stand on special teams. This latest move is another sign the team is still trying to raise the bar.

Kelly Stafford Rips NFL Over Rams Schedule Before Holiday Spotlight

Kelly Stafford is back in the middle of the Rams schedule conversation, and this time her frustration is aimed squarely at the leagues timing. On her Instagram story, she took issue with the way Los Angeles bye week is lined up in the 2026 NFL season, arguing the team is being asked to turn around far quicker than some of its peers.

The complaint centers on a Thanksgiving Eve game that comes only 9 to 10 days after the break, a setup that leaves the Rams with less recovery time right before one of the leagues biggest holiday stages. It is the second recent public criticism she has made about NFL scheduling, and it adds another layer to a calendar quirk that has already drawn attention around the team. [Read more 🡒]

Rams May Finally Need Rookie CJ Daniels In A Bigger Role

The Rams have been leaning on experience for much of the season, but the rookie class is starting to creep into the conversation as the offense searches for answers. Tight end Max Klare has already earned a larger look in recent weeks, and now wide receiver CJ Daniels appears to be next in line for a possible bump in usage as Los Angeles continues sorting through its passing-game depth.

Sean McVay said Daniels may get more opportunities moving forward, a notable shift for a player who has been used sparingly so far. With the Rams still evaluating how to piece together the receiver rotation, Daniels suddenly looks like one of the younger names worth watching if the team decides it needs a different look in the weeks ahead. Kelly Stafford Rips NFL Over Rams Schedule Frustration

Kelly Stafford is back in the middle of a league gripe, this time taking aim at the Rams 2026 bye-week setup on her Instagram story. Her complaint centered on the way the schedule leaves Los Angeles with a shorter reset than some other teams, all while the Rams are slated to return for the NFLs first Thanksgiving Eve game.

The frustration fits a recent pattern, since this is the second time in short order she has publicly gone after the league. For a Rams team that already has enough to manage across a long season, the schedule issue adds another small but noticeable layer of annoyance, especially when the timing around a bye is supposed to offer relief rather than more disruption.
